Teen charged
with robbery
A Goldsboro teen-ager was charged with armed robbery Friday after a tire company was held up in the morning.
Investigator M.K. Horstmann of the Goldsboro Police Department arrested Derontae T. Lee, 19, of Central Heights Road and charged him with robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail under $100,000 bond.
The charge was in connection with the robbery around 10 a.m. of Prince Tire Co. on George Street. Reportedly, an employee was approached by a black male with a gun who demanded the shop's money. He fled with about $2,400 and was seen fleeing in a Ford Tempo.
Lee is scheduled for his first court appearance Monday.
More teens charged
Two Wayne County deputies arrested two teen-agers early Saturday inside a Dudley business.
Deputies J.L. Hill and R. Thompson responded around 2 a.m. to reports of a break-in of a company on Heather Ann Lane. When they arrived, they found a door broken in and heard sounds inside the business, according to reports.
Two suspects emerged and were arrested without incident. Anthony Vincent Taylor Jr., 18, of Nelson Street, Mount Olive, and a 15-year-old were charged with felony counts of breaking and entering and each placed in the Wayne County Jail under $5,000 bond.
Burglary averted
A Fremont man surprised two men who broke into his home Friday night.
David Jay Herron of N.C. 222 told sheriff's officers that he heard someone enter his home around 9:30 p.m. He went to investigate and saw two black males who fled. No property was reported missing.
U.S. 70 closed
A one-vehicle accident closed a section of U.S. 70 temporarily Friday night, Goldsboro police reported.
Around 6:30 p.m., Jesse Lee Artis, 71, of Grove Street, Wilson, was driving a 2001 Cadillac south on U.S. 117 and nearing U.S. 70 when he ran off the left side of the road. The car traveled about 150 feet down an embankment and then rolled across the westbound lane of U.S. 70 and the median before landing in the eastbound lane.
The vehicle, which belonged to Hamilton Funeral Chapel Inc., was a total loss.
No other vehicles were hit and Artis suffered only what were reported to be minor injuries. He was transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Police estimated that Artis was driving 60 miles per hour in a 50-mph zone. He was charged with careless and reckless driving.
Investigations
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating these reports:
*Robert Leroy Webber, of Ditchbank Road, reported the theft of a drill/saw and drill bits early Saturday from a truck outside his home. The tools were valued at $330.
*Jewelry, DVDs, a camcorder and several hundred dollars of change were reported stolen Friday from an apartment in the 700 block of Sandhill Drive. The owner, Diane Persky, valued the property at $5,500.
*A break-in was reported Friday at Ray's Auto Shop on McCullen Drive, Dudley. An indeterminate amount of property was missing.
*Johnny Bruce Whaley of N.C. 581 reported the theft of a trailer and lawn equipment from outside his home Friday afternoon. Missing are a trailer, two riding lawnmowers, two trimmers and a lawn edger, worth around $12,000 total.
*James Allen Wilson reported the theft of a red four-wheeler from outside his home on U.S. 117 Alternate in Dudley. The 2002 Yamaha is valued at $4,600.
The Goldsboro Police Department is investigating these reports:
*Michael Jerome Barbara of Banks Avenue reported the theft of a video game system, games and other electronic equipment from his home early Saturday morning.
*Someone fired three shots into a home in the 400 block of North Carolina Street. Decarlos Lopez Hamilton reported the damage shortly before 3 p.m. Friday.
*More than $600 in currency was reported missing after a break-in at a home in 900 block of East Mulberry Street.
