To tell the truth
The scene was just like one from the old television game show, "To Tell the Truth," when all three contestants claimed to be the same person.
In this case will the real Quinyarda Denise Fowler of Hideaway Circle in Dudley please stand up?
Two women said they were really Ms. Fowler.
One woman had obtained credit and then bought an eight-piece bedroom set, a mattress set, a dryer and a washer on Jan. 21 from Bobby Denning Furniture Inc. at 1126 N. Breazeale Ave. in Mount Olive. The second woman watched the transaction but never identified herself.
The furniture store sued Ms. Fowler for the balance of the amount owed. On Monday in small claims court, Donna D. Gainey represented the store and presented a copy of a driver's license belonging to the first woman.
But Ms. Gainey said the woman in court who said she was Ms. Fowler did not fill out the credit application and, in fact, was the second woman. Ms. Gainey said the second woman said the two are sisters and had the same name. The second woman then fled from the magistrate's courtroom and left her identification card.
Sheriff's Detective Sgt. R. Thomas Flores Jr. checked the name with a photograph and determined that the first woman was the real Ms. Fowler. Deputies are seeking the second woman.
The status of the furniture was not immediately known.
Shooting charges
Two Goldsboro men were arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with felony offenses in unrelated shooting cases.
Jonathan Devon Lofton, 20, of West Grantham Street was charged with discharge of a weapon into occupied property and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill while inflicting serious injury.
Lofton was accused of firing a rifle April 23 into a home at 715 Bain St. and assaulting the resident, Rosemary McLain, Investigator M.K. Horstmann said.
Lofton was arrested, with assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation, at the West Parke Inn on U.S. 70 near Kinston. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $105,000 secured bond.
Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers assisted in the investigation.
The other man, Brian Devon Harvey, 24, of Central Heights Road, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon while inflicting serious injury.
Harvey was accused of shooting a neighbor, Leroy Randolph Jr., on Friday at Tanglewood Mobile Home Park on Central Heights Road, Investigator Dwayne Dean said.
Harvey had argued with Randolph outside of his home, then returned with a handgun, shot Randolph in the leg and fled, the police report said. Randolph was treated for his injury and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said.
Harvey was arrested at the Police Department. He was jailed in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond.
Lofton and Harvey were to have their first court appearances today to determine their legal representation.
Two charges
A 19-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with two felonies.
Antron Demon Hines of Carver Drive was charged with breaking and entering and second-degree kidnapping. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $20,500 secured bond. Hines was accused of breaking into a home in the 1000 block of Lincoln Drive on Monday and assaulting a woman resident, police said.
12 hurt in wrecks
Twelve people were injured and damages were estimated at $73,200 in eight recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $6,800 in a three-vehicle collision at 11:06 p.m. Monday at East Elm and South Slocumb streets, Goldsboro police said. Two drivers, Blake Anthony Elliott, 18, of Kelly Court and Alexis Eleasah Grundy, 19, of Conner Street, Mount Olive, and one of Ms. Grundy's passengers, Sebrina George of Olivia Lane, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Elliott's passenger, Malcolm Malik Miller of Shelly Drive, was being treated today, the spokeswoman said. Elliott was charged with a safe-movement violation. Police said the westbound car that Elliott was driving collided with a southbound van operated by William K. Renno, 32, of East Walnut Street and then struck Ms. Grundy's stopped eastbound auto. Police said Renno had a flashing yellow light and the other vehicles had a flashing red light.
*Two people were injured and both cars were demolished in a hit-and-run, head-on wreck at 7:15 p.m. Sunday on N.C. 55 near N.C. 111, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Oppie C. Sheffield, 22, and his passenger, Robin Sheffield, 29, both of Fort Bragg, were released after emergency-room treatment. Oppie Sheffield's westbound auto had collided with an eastbound car that had crossed the center line. The other driver fled, but troopers said the car was registered to Joseph Lee Gurganus of Whispering Lane, Dudley. The cars were valued at $9,000.
*Damage was estimated at $5,000 in a motorcycle crash at 7:20 p.m. Sunday on an exit ramp from Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, near Cuyler Best Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Stephen Hoss Green, 29, of Allison Drive, Dudley, was charged with reckless driving after the motorcycle entered a curve at a high rate of speed, ran off the left side and overturned, the report said. Green declined medical treatment.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $8,300 in a two-car collision at 8:37 p.m. Friday at U.S. 13 and Saulston Road, the Highway Patrol said. Mary Jane Hardebeck, 71, of Pioneer Trails Drive, Seven Springs, was released after emergency-room treatment. She also was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other driver, Flora M. Zigler, 72, of Tinderwood Drive, was stopped for traffic.
*A driver was injured and damages were put at $13,500 in a two-car crash at 5:40 p.m. Thursday at Church of God and Farm Club roads, the Highway Patrol said. Annette B. Capps, 56, of N.C. 903 North, LaGrange, was released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Thomas Mitchell Kelley, 30, of N.C. 111 North, was charged with driving left of center. Troopers said Kelley had started a left turn and his car collided with Ms. Capps' oncoming, southbound auto.
*A passenger was injured and a sport utility vehicle was demolished after it struck a cow at 9:20 p.m. Thursday on Old Smithfield Road near N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. Ronald Parks, 42, of Indian Springs Road, Seven Springs, was released after emergency-room treatment. The driver, Ronald Morris Parks, 16, of Indian Springs Road, was not charged. The SUV was valued at $15,000.
*Three passengers were injured and damages were estimated at $6,600 in a two-vehicle crash at 3:50 p.m. Thursday on Stevens Mill Road near Blackjack Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Tecory Russell, 12, of Edgerton Street, Brad Stidham, 13, of Dollard Town Road and Terrell Graham, 16, of West Oak Street were released after emergency-room treatment. Their driver, Leonard Calvin Williams, 47, of Patetown Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other driver was identified as Allyn Koch, 26, of Angela Drive.
*Both vehicles were demolished in a wreck at 11:15 a.m. July 13 on Baker Chapel Church Road near Bert Martin Road, the Highway Patrol said. One motorist, Cecilia Dawn Worley, 21, of Claude Scott Road, Warsaw, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Troopers said Ms. Worley had turned left from a driveway and the pickup that she was driving collided with a westbound car driven by Christine M. Kennedy, 85, of Bakers Chapel Church Road, Mount Olive. The vehicles were valued at $9,000.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Two coffins and other equipment were stolen between July 13 and Thursday from an unlocked truck at The Wilbert Way at 1401 W. Grantham St., a Goldsboro police report said. The property was valued at $9,632.
*A generator, a welder and a circular saw were stolen between Saturday and Monday from a storage building in the 1900 block of Hinnant Road, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside. The owner and resident, Paul R. Weaver, estimated value of his property at $1,450 and damage at $10.
