'Our Story' planned
Stagestruck alumni Benton Whitley and Brian Letchworth will perform a show of music and nostalgia called "Our Story Goes On."
The show will be performed Tuesday, Aug. 3, at 8 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre as a fund-raiser for the Stagestruck scholarship fund. Whitley and Letchworth will sing; Karen Patzer will accompany them on piano. Tickets are $5 at the door. Information: 736-4530.
Awards banquet
The Goldsboro Jaycees will honor the Goldsboro police officer, firefighter and rescue squad member of the year Tuesday night during their annual banquet.
Steve Hicks, the president of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, will be the guest speaker. The event will begin at 6 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church.
The award winners are chosen in a vote by department members.
National Night Out
Businesses, civic groups and churches that want to participate with a performance or have a display booth at National Night Out have been asked to call the Goldsboro Police Department.
The groups were asked to call Cpl. H.L. Lewis at 580-4238 or Cpl. Teresa Cox at 580-4256.
The annual National Night Out program is designed to show the community's strength against crime and drugs. It will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 3 in Herman Park. Musical entertainment, displays, games for children and refreshments will be included.
The theme for this year's program is "Give neighborhood crime and drugs a going-away party."
If your phone rings ...
The Fraternal Order of Police is raising money in Wayne County, and the local president says he doesn't want anyone to get it confused with any other fund-raisers.
Goldsboro Police Sgt. Ken Edwards said an associate member of FOP Lodge 62 of Goldsboro -- not an outside fund-raising company -- will be making telephone calls to solicit contributions. Edwards said only past contributors will be called, and other people will be contacted by mail.
The calls will be made by Debra Ellis.
The FOP, through member dues, provides insurance and legal assistance to law enforcement officers. Contributions are not used for those purposes but for the organization's community service projects. These include Christmas gifts for needy children, food baskets for the elderly and for disabled veterans, child identification booths, crime prevention, anti-drug activities, and shoes and clothing for children in poor families.
Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile today from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Whitley Church. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash.
