Man shot twice
A 39-year-old man was shot twice Thursday while he was trying to get his car back from another man, a Goldsboro police report said.
Rudolph V. Kelly of Emmaus Church Road, Dudley, was rushed to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
Kelly told officers that he was shot with a small handgun at about 7:35 a.m. He said he tried to get his car from an unknown man to whom he had loaned it. The suspect was described only as a 5-foot-tall black man who wore a white shirt and baggy jeans.
Kelly later filed a stolen-car report. He said the blue, four-door 1971 Ford LTD had been stolen Thursday from the 100 block of Rockefeller Court. The car had North Carolina license RWN 7021 and was valued at $1,000.
Wreck survivor
A 14-year-old boy has survived a one-vehicle crash in which the driver was killed Sunday, according to a Highway Patrol report released today.
Austin Letchworth of Pridgen Road, Snow Hill, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated, admitted and later released, a spokeswoman said.
The driver, Michael Ray Pate, 17, of 250 Harper Drive, Snow Hill, died in the crash at 8:37 a.m. on U.S. 13 near Overman Road, about six miles south of Goldsboro.
The pickup truck crossed the center line, Trooper M.G. Conley said, then ran off the left side, traveled 138 feet, rammed a tree and traveled another 27 feet before stopping in a ditch.
The 1986 GMC pickup, valued at $5,500, was demolished. It was registered to Donald Ray Pate of Harper Drive, Snow Hill.
The fatality was the 17th this year on Wayne County roads, including two in Goldsboro.
Three hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $27,100 in five recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*A driver was injured in a collision at 7:18 a.m. Thursday at Indian Springs and Kelly Springs roads, the Highway Patrol said. Arielle Leigh Darden, 19, of Stanley Chapel Church Road, Dudley, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Jonathan Glenn Jernigan, 18, of Garner Chapel Road, Mount Olive, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. Damages were set at $1,900.
*Damages were estimated at $5,600 in a two-vehicle crash at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday on Daw Pate Road near Stoney Creek Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Joseph Marquis Miller, 22, of Laulas Place, Pikeville, was charged with improper passing. Murry Raborn Daw, 65, of Stoney Creek Church Road, was turning left into a driveway.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a collision at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday on New Hope Road near Wayne Memorial Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Daniel Aaron Boone, 20, of Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other motorist was identified as Lauren Beth Williams, 17, of Cross Place.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured and damages were set at $11,300 at 2:35 p.m. Monday at U.S. 117 and Old Grantham Road, the Highway Patrol said. Scott Keith White, 41, of Greystone Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. George Anthony Matthews, 46, of Wilson was charged with a stoplight violation.
*A driver from Dudley was injured at 4:45 p.m. Saturday at Woodland Church and Five Points roads, the Highway Patrol said. Charles Johnson Oliver Jr., 27, of Lafayette Street was released after emergency-room treatment. Amber Lynn Tyson, 17, of Derek Drive, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. Damages were put at $3,300.
Stolen truck found
A pickup truck that was stolen from Five Points Shopping Center on U.S. 117 South at Mar Mac was found Thursday in Goldsboro. A man was charged with felony possession of a stolen vehicle.
Chester Gene Kornegay of Saulston Road had told Wayne County sheriff's deputies that he had let a woman drive the 1989 Ford pickup. She then called him to say the truck had been stolen. Sheriff's Deputy Patrick Hux found the truck in a parking lot at Mina Weil Park on South John Street and arrested the man inside.
Anthony Leonard White, 35, of Stevens Mill Road was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Jordan card stolen
A Michael Jordan basketball card, valued at $7,000, 100 baseball cards, valued at $1,000, and other property were stolen Thursday from a home in the 3000 block of Old Grantham Road, according to a Wayne County sheriff's report.
The resident, Mike David Anderson, also reported the theft of jewelry, a Meredith College class ring, $100 in cash and a video camera. This property, including a diamond ring and an anniversary ring, was valued at $4,800.
The thief had broken a door to get inside, deputies said. Damage was set at $500.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Three rings, a television, a satellite control box, a video cassette recorder and two DVD players were stolen Thursday after a window was damaged at an apartment in the 100 block of Scott Hills Drive. The resident, R.A. Johnson, estimated the value of the property at $1,350.
*A Toro push lawn mower, a Murray riding lawn mower and a freezer were stolen after a door and steps were damaged at a home in the 100 block of Doug Drive. The resident, James Thomas Laws Jr., estimated the property's value at $830.
*A Honda dirt bike was stolen from the 100 block of Heather Glenn Drive. The owner and resident, Debra Ann Spain, put a $3,100 value on it.
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A video-game system, compact discs, games and movies were stolen Thursday after a door was forced open at a home in the 2000 block of Koonce Street. The resident, Ray Ammons, said his property was worth $1,000.
*A laptop computer, a DVD player, two DVDs and a satellite receiver were stolen Thursday from an apartment in the 3100 block of Cashwell Drive. The resident, Brandon T. Rozell, said his property was valued at $2,490.
Drug Squad arrests
Two Goldsboro men were arrested Thursday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with unrelated crimes.
*Brandon Lamont Oates, 22, of Courtyard Circle was charged with possession with intent to sell marijuana. He also was held on an outstanding arrest order. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
*Antonio Devon Lamm, 17, of Carver Drive was charged with possession of a concealed weapon. He was released from custody on an unsecured bond of $500.
Sexual assault
A 22-year-old Goldsboro man has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with a first-degree sexual offense with a child.
Johnnie Howard Hall Jr. of West New Hope Road was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond. He was charged by Detective Sgt. Tammy Odom after an investigation of a report of a sexual assault involving a 2-year-old child.
Lumber theft
Wayne County Sheriff's officers have charged three men with stealing lumber.
James Michael Guy, 27, of Edwards Store Road, Mount Olive; Ricky Lynn Fields, 44, of Webber Lane, Dudley, and Leonard Elton Jones Jr., 45, of Morgan Circle, Dudley, were charged with misdemeanor larceny. Their bonds was set at $500 each.
The lead investigator, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour, said more arrests were possible. He was assisted by Sgt. Sherwood Daly, Cpl. Richard Blizzard and Deputy Randy Thompson.
Robbery, assault
A Goldsboro teen was arrested Thursday by Wayne County sheriff's officers and charged with the assault and robbery of a handicapped person.
Matthew R. Mansfield, 17, of Tilghman Street was charged with assault on a 54-year-old handicapped man and common-law robbery. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond. Detective Sgt. Michael Reid said the victim identified the suspect.
