Crowd gathers for free ice cream

Temperatures may have cooled slightly Thursday, but it was still hot enough for a crowd of people to want to slurp down free ice cream at the Farmer's Market.
The annual ice cream social, sponsored by the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp., brought out the young and the young at heart.
Sherry Archibald, promotions coordinator for the DGDC, said she had ordered twice as much ice cream this year as last.
"We have 10 tubs this year, because we ran out last year," she said.
Though there was no doughnut-dipping contest, people could dip their doughnuts in a thick chocolate sauce at a booth.
Kids jumped up and down in the "moonwalk" after having their faces painted. A bubble machine also provided a lot of entertainment for a crowd of youngsters bursting with energy.
DJ Wildheart provided a variety of music, including rock and roll and country.
Several brave souls stepped up to the microphone and sang karaoke to the music of Shania Twain and others.
While volunteers scooped ice cream, vendors stayed busy selling fresh vegetables.
Watermelons, squash, onions, tomatoes, cabbage, potatoes, peas, string beans, plums and peaches filled the wooden baskets in the stalls lining the market on Center Street.
"I'm going home to fry me some chicken," one woman said, after buying corn-on-the-cob. "I love fried chicken and corn."
