Incident probed
Goldsboro police investigated an incident Friday in fields along Graves Drive, but they said little about what had happened.
Maj. Jay Memmelaar said their investigation should be completed in a few days, but he declined to say what the police were investigating or if a crime had been committed.
Seven hurt in wreck
PRINCETON -- One driver and six passengers in a second vehicle were injured and both vehicles were demolished Tuesday night in a collision at U.S. 70 and Pearl Street, officials said.
The injured were taken by Princeton Rescue Squad and Wayne County Emergency Services ambulances to Wayne Memorial Hospital. They were treated and later released.
"Everybody was extremely lucky," Princeton Police Chief Eddie Lewis said Friday.
The injured included a driver, Alice W. Crawford, 42, of Washington Court, Goldsboro; and the passengers, John Heath, 64; Mary Heath, 61; and Brent Winter, 14, all of Trenton; and Beverly Pike, 35, Jonathan Paul Pike, 2, and Adam Williams, 10, all of Kinston.
The passengers were riding with the other driver, Tommy Ray Pike, 34, of Kinston.
Chief Lewis said Ms. Craw-ford was going east on U.S. 70, and Tommy Pike had left a fast-food restaurant and was going north on Pearl Street.
Lewis said Ms. Crawford drove around stopped traffic on U.S. 70, her car slammed into the van and the van overturned.
Both drivers said they had the green light. Lewis said no other witnesses have come forward. As a result, no charges have been filed. But Lewis said an investigation of the crash had not been completed.
Ms. Crawford's 2001 Nissan was valued at $3,500, and Pike's 1992 Ford van was valued at $7,000.
Two drivers charged
PRINCETON -- Two drivers have been charged by the Highway Patrol after a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 70, west of Princeton.
Troopers said the collision at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday happened like this:
An item fell from a utility trailer being pulled by a truck driven by Stanley C. McClain, 46, of Princeton. A following driver, Michelle Martin, 39, stopped in the right lane to avoid the item.
Then an unidentified driver stopped in the left lane. Another motorist, Michael Matthew Watson, 19, of Rollingwood Drive, Dudley, swerved from the left lane to avoid the trailer and hit the back of Mrs. Martin's car.
McClain was charged with failure to secure a load, and Watson was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.
McClain's trailer was not damaged. Damage was set at $1,500 to Mrs. Martin's car and $5,000 to Watson's vehicle.
Juvenile arrested
in pizza robbery
A 13-year-old girl was arrested Friday and charged with felonious possession of stolen property. She is accused of taking part in a robbery of a pizza delivery person that took place on June 30. She was released into the custody of her mother.
Break-ins
Law enforcement officers are investigation several breaking and entering incidents that occurred over the past few days in both the city and the county.
Thomas Farlow of Herman Street reported Saturday that sometime Friday night someone tried to get into his house. The front screen door was open and a screw was removed from a front window. No entry was made to the house.
A resident of Oak Street also reported finding his back door unlocked and open after returning to his home Saturday. Nothing was missing from the house.
A woman on Vanderbuilt Circle came home to find her air conditioning unit on the floor of her living room and several items worth almost $1,300 were stolen. Among the things missing were grocery items, a DVD player, movies, along with some pots and pans.
Bryan Manuel on Prince Avenue reported that someone kicked his back door in on Thursday, but nothing was missing from the house.
Tom Harper, the pastor of Second Baptist Church on Beech Street, noticed two broken windows on an unused building on church property. No entry had been gained and there was no other damage to the property.
An employee of the Wayne County Public School system reported that the windows in two of the work vans were broken. John Hicks told police that someone entered the fenced in area of the public school maintenance area on Bain Street and damaged the vehicles. There was $500 worth of damage.
Kelly F. Teasley of Charlie Braswell Road reported that someone broke in her home and stole a Remington 20 gauge shotgun, worth $200. She also told deputies that a pickle jar with about $100 in change was missing.
Illegal dumping
Cornell Mickens told police that there was illegal dumping on Walnut Street. Mickens found two loads of construction debris in the yard, more than 500 pounds of trash. He told police that he believed the dumping was happening at night.
