Chatman applies for council vacancy

Former Goldsboro Planning Director Don Chatman has applied for the vacant District 3 council seat.
The city received Chatman's application Thursday. He joins three other candidates -- Nathaniel Best, D.A. Stuart and Naomi Williams -- in applying for the position.
Chatman worked for the city for more than 30 years before retiring in December.
He said that he felt that he had "played a small part in the development and growth of the city as a member of the Department of Planning and Community Development."
Chatman said he would like to continue to have a voice in the city's future development.
He began his career with Goldsboro in 1973 and spent the first seven years as a planning technician. Chatman was promoted to zoning administrator in 1985, which gave him the responsibility of reviewing site and subdivision plans. He also researched and prepared graphics for area studies.
From 1985 to 1988 he served as a planner for the city. During that time he was a staff adviser to the Historic District Commission and also drafted amendments to the zoning ordinance.
Chatman was promoted to the position of assistant director of planning and community development in 1988 and held that position until he became planning director in 1994.
The District 3 seat became available in June when former Councilman William Goodman resigned.
The city is accepting applications until 5 p.m. today. On Monday the screening committee will review the applications to decide which candidates to interview. Mayor Al King and Councilmen Charles Williams and Chuck Allen are on the screening committee.
The entire council will interview selected candidates Thursday and is expect to name the new councilman by the July 19 meeting.
