14 people injured
in Wayne collisions
No traffic fatalities were reported over the long July 4 holiday weekend in Wayne County. But 14 people were injured and damages were estimated at $77,500 in 12 weekend collisions, officers reported.
*A sport utility vehicle was demolished in a wreck at 12:05 a.m. Monday on N.C. 111 near N.C. 581, the Southern Connector, the Highway Patrol said. Jose Lemus Hernandez, 34, of Old Smith Chapel Road, Mount Olive, was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired after his SUV ran off the left side, struck a ditch and overturned. The SUV was valued at $4,500.
*Damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 1 p.m. Monday on North Spence Avenue near Mall Road, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Michael Dontae Sutton, 17, of Church Road, LaGrange, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Police said Sutton had left a parking lot and the car that he was driving collided with a northbound sport utility vehicle operated by Patricia N. Wilson, 54, of Westover Drive.
*Two people on a motorcycle were injured at 11:15 p.m. Sunday on Stevens Mill Road near N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Richard Leamon Capps, 44, and his passenger, Helen Capps, 44, both of Smithfield, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The cycle ran off the right side, causing Richard Capps to lose control of it, and both people were ejected. Damage was put at $2,000. No charges were filed.
*A pickup was demolished in a wreck at 8 p.m. Sunday on Mount Carmel Church Road near Daw Pate Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Trina Allyn Owens, 17, of Union Grove Church Road, Fremont, was charged with reckless driving. Troopers said the truck ran off the right side, came back on the road, spun sideways, ran off the right side, struck a ditch and overturned in woods. The pickup was valued at $8,000.
*An 8-year-old girl crossing in front of an ice cream truck was struck by a passing car and injured at 8 p.m. Saturday on Odom Farm Lane, the Highway Patrol said. Shanna Renee Leath of South Running Deer Circle, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment for a foot injury. The driver, Debbie Jeannette Alford, 32, of Odom Farm Lane, Dudley, was not charged. Her car was not damaged.
*Both drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 7:25 p.m. Saturday at Wayne Memorial Drive and New Hope Road, the Highway Patrol said. Kenneth Artis, 40, of Shirley Drive, Dudley, and Christine S. Radford, 66, of Mount Carmel Church Road, Pikeville, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Radford was charged with a stoplight violation. Artis was going south and Ms. Radford was going north.
*Two drivers were injured and damages were put at $7,000 in a three-vehicle collision at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at LaGrange and Parkstown roads, the Highway Patrol said. Samuel Body, 80, of Parkstown Road, LaGrange, and Tia Michelle Parker, 18, of Parkstown Road, LaGrange, were released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Jose Santos Lopez, 25, of Church Road, LaGrange, was charged with a stop-sign violation. Troopers said Lopez's southbound pickup collided with the eastbound car that Ms. Parker was driving and then ricocheted into Body's stopped northbound pickup.
*A car sustained an estimated $5,500 in damaged after striking a deer at 9:15 p.m. Saturday on Conover Road near the Lenoir County line, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, James Leroy Carlton, 60, of Peachtree Drive, was neither injured nor charged.
*A passenger was injured and damages were set at $5,000 in a two-car crash at 9:20 p.m. Friday at Emmaus Church and Sleepy Creek roads, the Highway Patrol said. Roberto Delgadillo, 25, of Sandra Lane, Dudley, were released after emergency-room treatment. He was riding with Ana Sanchez Arriaga, 23, of Sandra Lane. The other motorist, Gwendolyn B. Fryar, 56, of Daly Drive, Dudley, was charged with a yield violation. Troopers said Ms. Fryar's eastbound auto collided with Delgadillo's southbound car.
*Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 4:10 p.m. Friday at Emmaus Church and Arrington Bridge roads, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Abel Rubio, 34, of Casey Mill Road, Dudley, and his passenger, George Villalobos, 16, of Les Lane, Dudley, and the other driver, Philip Dean Best, 35, of Grady Road, Princeton, and his passenger, Ricky Fields, 44, of Webber Lane, Dudley, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Best was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired and reckless driving.
*A new sport utility vehicle was demolished in a wreck at 11:10 p.m. Thursday on Stevens Mill Road near N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Ronnie Sam Chisolm Jr., 27, of Old Smithfield Road, was not charged after the SUV ran off the right side, came back across the road out of control and overturned off the left side. The SUV was valued at $18,000.
*A driver was injured and damage was fixed at $8,000 in a wreck at 6:30 p.m. Thursday on New Hope Road near Hare Road, the Highway Patrol said. Christin Elizabeth Grubb, 17, of Lane Tree Drive, was released after emergency-room treatment. No charges were filed after the car ran off the right side, careened back across the road out of control, struck the left ditch and overturned.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A pearl necklace, cash and checks were stolen between Friday and Monday from a home in the 500 block of Manley Grove Church Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Ralph Glenn Britt, put a $1,210 value on his property. No sign of forced entry was listed.
*A red 1999 International truck with a 28-foot bed was stolen between Sunday and Monday from S&M Auto Sales at 4044 U.S. 70 West, deputies said. The truck was valued at $39,499.
A three-carat diamond ring, clothing, shoes, old coins and a DVD player were stolen between Saturday and Monday from a home in the 400 block of North Carolina Street, Goldsboro police said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside. The resident, Paulette Champion, estimated her property's value at $6,590 and damage at $200.
Robbery try
An 18-year-old man was assaulted today by black men who demanded his money, a Goldsboro police report said.
Anthony James Bruey of Dudley reported that the suspects approached him at about 12:50 a.m. at a motel on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway and asked for his money. When he refused, one suspect punched Bruey in the face and then both suspects fled in a brown car, police said.
Missing
A 15-year-old girl was reported missing Monday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Gladys Anavisca Cifuentes of 1750 N.C. 55 West, Mount Olive, was described as Hispanic, 5-feet-2 and 110 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
She was seen last at 11 p.m. Sunday. No clothing description was available. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
Correction
James Levon Manley Jr., 36, of East Nelson Street, Mount Olive, and James Russell Wooten, 40, of Nelson Street, Mount Olive, who were listed in the June 23 edition as having been picked up on arrest orders for drug charges, were actually arrested for failure to pay child support. The News-Argus apologizes for the error.
