Biotech degree

James Sprunt Community College will begin the fall semester with a new two-year biotechnology program in collaboration with Pitt Community College.

"Biotechnology is an emerging field in eastern North Carolina, and we want our students to be qualified for these new careers," said June Davis, dean of curriculum services.

Students interested in the program may take their first year of general classes at James Sprunt and then transfer to Pitt for the more specialized coursework. The program emphasizes biology, chemistry, mathematics and technical communications.

Successful graduates would find opportunities as research assistants to biologists or chemists, laboratory technicians, instrumentation technicians or as quality control and quality assurance technicians.

Registration for fall semester is Aug. 17. Information is available by calling the college at 910-296-2500.
