Weekend fireworks planned in Wayne

Residents can see public fireworks displays on Saturday and Monday in Wayne County.
On Saturday, fireworks will be displayed at 9 p.m. at the Mount Olive Municipal Airport and at Pikeville's park.
On Monday, Berkeley Mall will have a fireworks display, starting at 9 p.m.
Pikeville and Mount Olive also have other events planned for the weekend.
Tonight and Saturday, Pikeville will hold its annual Independence Day festival.
The event starts tonight with a 5K run at 7, with registration beginning at 6. It will begin at the old school building. Following the run, the Charles B. Aycock Jazz Band will play from 8 to 9. People are encouraged to bring chairs.
On Saturday, the festival will start with a yard sale at 7 a.m. The opening ceremonies will be from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and during that time will be the crowning of Miss and Mr. Independence Day and the award for Pikeville's distinguished person.
The event will also include children's games, a lawnmower tractor pull, a car show, a horseshoe competition, demonstration of the sheriff's drug-sniffing dogs and a variety of musical entertainment.
On Sunday, the Mount Olive Exchange Club will sponsor a children's parade, with line-up at 4:15 p.m. at Westbrook Park in Mount Olive. At 5 p.m. opening ceremonies will be held, followed by entertainment, free food and activities like children's games and bingo. There will also be various other entertainment throughout the evening.
