High-speed chase
A high-speed chase ended Thursday night with a struggle and Goldsboro police apprehending a man who was suspected of breaking into a coin-operated machine.
A police officer said he was on routine patrol when he saw an SUV in the parking lot of the Hurry Clean Car Wash at 1311 Parkway Ave. after hours. The report said a ladder was poking out of the open back window of the SUV.
The officer said that while his cruiser passed the car wash he saw a man get into the vehicle and drive away. He checked the coin-operated wash machine and found it had been damage.
He called an alert to other officers, and some of them spotted the SUV on Ash Street. They tried to stop him, but a chase ensued. They soon caught him on Ash Street, and he was being charged this morning. His name was not released.
Former legislator's tires stolen
Philip Baddour Jr. of Pine Ridge Lane told Goldsboro police someone removed all four tires from his 2000 Buick Park Avenue while it was parked at his mother's home on Stevens Street.
He said he arrived at his mother's house Wednesday and left the vehicle parked in the driveway to her home. He said he awoke the next morning to find all four tires, valued at more than $3,000, missing from the car.
Home invasion
Only the children were home when a man invaded Paul Michael Wright's home on Club Knolls Road, Dudley.
He told Wayne County sheriff's investigators his children saw a tan or silver Dodge four-door pickup truck park below their home. A man got out and walked toward the house.
Wright said the children hid in a bathroom. They reported hearing a loud bang, then the sound of someone inside the house. They couldn't say how long the man was in there. They heard him going up and down the stairs. They said he kicked open the door to the room where they were hiding, but he apparently did not see them.
Items reported taken included a $1,500 laptop computer, jewelry of undetermined value, three shotguns, a powder rifle and a Russian rifle. No money amount was given. The report said damage to the two doors and frames was $750.
Crimes
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating the following crimes:
*Items valued at $16,985 were found missing after a break-in reported Thursday morning at the home of Eugina Denise Aldridge, U.S. 117 Alternate, Dudley. Investigators found the back door glass broken. Items taken included a Dell computer, television, Playstation and games, jewelry, commemorative coins, silver, a boombox, printer, stereo and lap top computer.
*Thieves reportedly took $4,775 worth of items from the home of Janice Kennedy on U.S. 117 North, Pikeville. The report said they came in through a bedroom window, which was unlocked, and took a VCR, a cable box and jewelry. Investigators are processing a cigarette butt that was left in an ash tray. Ms. Kennedy said it was not there when she left for work.
*A report said someone kicked in the back door to Jackie Irene McMillion's house on Forest Knolls Road and took several items, all valued at $2,218. They included a television, figurines, a telephone, jewelry and a knife.
*Someone reportedly stole $400 from the wallet of Pedro Lopez Cabrera of Al Drive, Seven Springs. He told investigator around 2 a.m. that a woman knocked on his door and wanted to get some gas. He said he didn't have any. She then asked for a drink. He said he let the woman in and gave her a drink. Then, she wanted to use the restroom, which she did. But he said she stopped at his bedroom on her way back out and took the money from his wallet.
*Investigators found no sign of forced entry in a break-in reported Thursday morning at the home of Timothy Jerome Whitfield on Jenny Lane. Items taken, valued at $260, included a Playstation 2, a memory card and a game.
The Goldsboro Police Department is investigating the following crimes:
*A car theft was reported Thursday from a parking lot at 1305 W. Grantham St. Benita Henderson of South Claiborne Street told police her fiancé, Berry Ingram of Princeton, called her Tuesday and told her someone had stolen her white 1996 Nissan Sentra valued at $3,500 while he was at work.
*Police are investigating a report of the theft of a vehicle and handgun and assault. The vehicle was recovered, but not the .38 caliber gun valued at $125. Edward King of North James Street said four men assaulted him at a residence on Brown Rigg Street and took his wife's 1997 Mercury Mountaineer SUV. He said the gun was inside it. Police found the SUV at 801 W. Grantham St., but the gun was no longer in there.
*Employees at Belks at 617 N. Berkeley Blvd. reported an attempt to obtain property by false pretense, and the mall security guards apprehended Joe Kent Pagitt, 44, of Quaker Drive, police said. He was charged with obtaining property by false pretense. Bond was set at $2,500. Clerks said he man took merchandise from the women's wear section of the store and took it to the checkout counter for a refund. The clerk refused, and he tried to leave the store.
*A break-in was reported Thursday afternoon at the home of Ashley Kincaid on East Ash Street. About $200 in damage was done to the front door to gain entry. Items taken, valued at $1,680, included DVDs, jewelry, two shotguns, a suitcase, some cash and a blanket.
*William Roger Bedford of Ridgecrest Drive told police someone entered an unlocked storage room at his home and took golf equipment valued at $419 sometime after June 19.
*A break-in at the home of Anthony Perkins on East Elm Street netted thieves $2,128 worth of items, including a DVD player, 42 DVDs, a digital camera and memory chip, an MD3 player, jewelry and a camcorder. He said he was in the process of moving out of the house and had come back to get some items when he discovered a southside bedroom window open. He said it had been locked, but the report said officers found no sign of forced entry.
*John Kicks of East Ash Street reported jewelry, a DVD and some empty DVD cases missing, all valued at $245. He said someone threw a rock through a back window to get inside the home.
*Pier One Imports at 403 N. Berkeley Blvd. say someone tried to cash a check with phony identification twice in the same week. The person failed both times, but got away with the phony ID. They said the N.C. driver's license appeared to be printed from a computer.
Missing
Police are investigating a report of a missing woman. Diane Wactor of Allen Street told police her mother, Mary Ann Gainey, 52, of the same address, left her a note saying she was leaving. She said she may be driving a white 1992 Toyota Corolla.
Collision on Berkeley
Two drivers and two passengers were unhurt, but $5,500 worth of damage resulted in a collision Thursday afternoon at Berkeley Boulevard and Pinewood Plaza.
Jean Waters of LaGrange was charged with failure to see to avoid a collision after she tried to turn from the Pinewood Plaza parking lot onto Berkeley.
She pulled her 2001 Daewoo into the path of a 2001 Dodge driven by Kimberly Sanderson Twiddy of LaGrange, police said. Damage was $3,500 to the Daewoo and $2,000 to the Dodge.
