Clerk, pizza man
report robberies
A convenience store clerk and a pizza delivery man were robbed Wednesday, Goldsboro police reports said.
The store clerk at the Spur gas station at 2000 N. William St. said that at about 9:30 p.m. a white man brought a beer from the cooler to the counter at the cash register. When the clerk opened the register, police said, the man struck her with the beer bottle, grabbed an undetermined amount of money from the cash drawer and fled.
The robber was described as 6 feet tall and 200 pounds with a large build and a bald head. He wore a gray shirt with a blue stripe and blue jeans.
A man delivering two large pizzas for Pizza Inn told police that he had stopped at about 5:30 p.m. at an apartment in the 200 block of Alpha Court. When the resident took a long time to get money for the food, a black man grabbed the pizzas from the delivery man and fled.
The robber was described only as being about 14 to 18 years old, and he wore jeans. The pizzas were valued at $27.50.
Man shot twice
A 25-year-old Goldsboro man was shot twice Wednesday at Olivia Lane and Lincoln Drive, Goldsboro police said.
The victim, Laccota Deroe Woods of King Drive, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
Woods told police that he was standing on the corner at about 11:30 a.m. when a green car with Florida plates pulled up. Then a black man dressed in all black got out of the passenger side and shot Woods in the nose and the ankle, police said.
The shooter and the driver, also described only as a black man, then drove off.
Burglary
A family was awakened before dawn today by a loud noise in their home on Lou Alma Drive and discovered that someone had broken in and stolen jewelry and other property, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report. The stolen property was valued at $4,010.
Janice P. Bishop told deputies that she had heard the noise at about 1:30 a.m. in her kitchen. Then she and her children fled in a car and dialed 911.
When they returned home, they found that their front door had been damaged and the property was missing, the report said. Deputy Randy Thompson and his dog, Linda, and Deputy Chuck Arnold followed footprints to a vacant mobile home on Greg Drive and found the stolen property inside.
Jewelry, a DVD player, a video cassette recorder, a DVD-VCR combination, a camera, a television and a video-game player were recovered. The jewelry was valued at $2,785. The other property was valued at $1,225.
Theft
A man who went shopping at Wal-Mart and left without paying for the items was arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police and charged with one felony count of larceny and three misdemeanor counts of larceny.
Michael Shane Smith, 28, of Antioch Road, Pikeville, was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of two secured bonds totaling $5,500.
Smith was accused of stealing property on Saturday from the store, Investigator Dale Foster said. Officers Arian Southerland and B.J. Gilstrap charged Smith on Wednesday with stealing a video cassette recorder.
Driver in ICU
A driver involved in a collision with a tractor-trailer on Monday at U.S. 70 and N.C. 581 was listed today in stable condition in the intensive care unit at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Barry Lee Dietrich, 56, was going south on N.C. 581 across the four-lane divided highway, the Highway Patrol said. His sport utility vehicle collided with an eastbound tractor-trailer at 9:51 a.m. Witnesses said Dietrich had run a red light, the report said.
The trucker, Coley James Ballard, 44, of Conover, was neither injured nor charged. The big rig that he was driving for Whiteside Cotton Carriers of Kings Mountain sustained about $1,000 in damages. Dietrich's new SUV, valued at $20,000, was demolished.
Charges are pending against Dietrich, State Trooper J.S. Smith said.
In other collisions:
*Five people were injured in a two-vehicle crash at 1:02 p.m. Monday at Wayne Memorial Drive and Duck Ridge Drive, the Highway Patrol said. A driver, Anna S. Batts, 55, of Magnolia, and her passengers, Cynthia Dean, 71, of Magnolia and Mary Sloan, 48, Onjeil Grantham, 2, and Ayinda Grantham, 5, all of Decoy Drive, Pikeville, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other motorist who was driving a state Corrections Department pickup -- Henry Lee May Jr., 44, of Walstonburg -- was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. Damages were set at $3,300.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured in a two-car collision at 4:14 p.m. Wednesday at North George and Vine streets, Goldsboro police said. Gloria Jean Artis, 41, of Cindy Circle was released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Demetrius Montrell Worrells, 18, of Argo Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Police said Worrells had stopped and then tried to make a left turn and the westbound car that he was driving collided with Ms. Artis' southbound auto. Damages were put at $3,500.
Mobile home fire
Fire on Wednesday night destroyed a mobile home in the 300 block of Union Grove Church Road. No one was injured.
Unattended cooking was blamed, Assistant Fremont Fire Chief W.T. Smith said. The home was engulfed in flames when Fremont, Nahunta and Polly Watson volunteers arrived at about 7 p.m. The residents' names were not immediately available.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers also are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment and a DVD movie were stolen Wednesday after a door was damaged at a home in the 1000 block of North Jordans Chapel Road, sheriff's deputies said.
The resident, D.L. Denning, estimated the value of the property at $670 and damage at $500.
*A 1997 Freightliner C-120 tractor was stolen Wednesday from the Kangaroo service station on U.S. 70 West, deputies said. The driver, Dexter Lamont Williams of Hookerton, said he was buying the tractor from John Wilson III of Greensboro. He also said he had left the keys in the ignition. The vehicle was valued at $20,000.
*An unlocked brown, four-door 1986 Cadillac Fleetwood was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from the 1900 block of East Holly Street, police said. The owner, Demetrice Antoine Stevens of Goldsboro, said the car was worth $800.
