Three county schools receive honors

Three Wayne County public schools have received honors from the national conference of Technology Student Association.
Students from Eastern Wayne Middle, Eastern Wayne High and Norwayne Middle schools were among 4,000 TSA members across the country attending the annual conference held recently in Nashville, Tenn. More than 60 competitive events were held with projects in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Eastern Wayne Middle School received the Chapter of Excellence Award for North Carolina. Michael McKnight, Sterling Raynor and Leslie Crawford were awarded the Gold Achievement Award for their outstanding accomplishments with TSA. McKnight was also inducted into the TSA National Honor Society.
The school also received 13 finalist recognitions. Michael McKnight placed first in the Technical Design Challenge and received the second place trophy for his individual score on the Chapter Team Middle School Written Test. Kristin Mewborn placed second for her TSA Talk - Multimedia presentation. Geordi Brown and Brooke Newsome received second place honors for their Construction Challenge project.
Wilson Mewborn and Beverly Boltinhouse are the advisers for the school chapter.
The other finalists from the school were in the top 10 in the nation and received pins.
They were: Erin Alemdar and Amanda Sweeney - Challenging Technology Issues; Michael McKnight, Geordi Brown, and Wes Johnson - System Control; Michael McKnight - Electrical Applications; Jordan Stevens and Regan Stoneburner - Inventions and Innovations; Jordan Stevens - Technical Writing Challenge; Regan Stoneburner - Chapter Team Middle School Written Test; Brooke Newsome - Chapter Team Middle School Written Test; and Erin Alemdar, Michael McKnight, Kristin Mewborn, Megan Morrison, Brooke Newsome, and Regan Stoneburner - Chapter Team Middle School.
Representatives from Norwayne Middle School also attended the Leadership Conference and received seven finalist recognitions. Leslie Crawford, Sterling Raynor, and Blake Vail received the first place trophy in Manufacturing Challenge and Devita Artis and Lavita Applewhite placed third in Inventions and Innovations.
John Vause and Elaine Worrell are the advisers for Norwayne.
The other five finalists from Norwayne are: Leslie Crawford, Daniel Raynor, and Sterling Raynor - Marine Design Challenge; Leslie Crawford, Daniel Raynor, and Sterling Raynor - Medical Technology Challenge; Philip Mzyk and Kenan Stewart - Construction Challenge; Devita Artis, Lavita Applewhite, Leslie Crawford, Sterling Raynor, and Blake Vail - Agriculture and Biotechnology Challenge; and Philip Mzyk - Prepared Speech.
Eastern Wayne High School received six finalist recognitions. Daniel McKnight placed first in Technical Sketching and Applications High School. It was his first time receiving the top trophy at the high school level, but he has won the event at the middle school level and placed in the top 10 all four years in high school.
Chapter adviser is Dr. Ralph Smith.
The other five finalists from the school are: Daniel McKnight - Chapter Team High School Written Test; Andrew Smith - Technology Bowl Written Test; Daniel McKnight, Andrew Smith, and Joey Burridge - Technology Bowl; Keli Artis and Ann Dixon - Medical Technology; Keli Artis, Joey Burridge, Ann Dixon, Daniel McKnight, Andrew Smith, and Eric Stover - Chapter Team High School.
