Cyclist reported
in 'fair' condition
Dr. Kurt A. Luedtke, a Goldsboro psychologist, was reported Monday to be in fair condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville after his motorcycle was struck by a car, a spokeswoman said.
Luedtke, 57, of Wackena Point, had pulled from a stop sign at Rosewood Road and N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. His motorcycle was struck by a westbound car driven by Angela R. Bryant, 18, of Old Smithfield Road, Princeton. Charges are pending, the investigating trooper, R.P. Hooks, said.
Four hurt in wrecks
Four people were injured and damage was estimated at $32,500 in five recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was injured and damage was estimated at $12,000 in a two-car collision at 1:50 p.m. Monday on Big Daddy's Road near Lancaster Road, the Highway Patrol said. Harold Lee Person Jr., 31, of Nahunta Road, Pikeville, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other motorist, Elizabeth C. Holloman, 45, of Massey Holt Road, Princeton, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision.
*A pedestrian was struck by a sport utility vehicle at 7:20 p.m. Monday in a service-station parking lot in the 2000 block of North William Street, Goldsboro police said. Kenneth Shane Ham, 47, of Bryan Boulevard was released after emergency-room treatment. The driver, David Shane Bjorling, 42, of Valerie Street, told police that he was backing up. He was charged with a safe-movement violation. His SUV was not damaged.
*The driver of a tractor-trailer slammed on his brakes in order to avoid a collision with a car at 8:24 p.m. Monday at West Grantham Street and an exit ramp from Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 117 South bypass, police said. The load in the trailer shifted, police said, and caused an estimated $6,000 to the big rig. The trucker, Bryan Edward Martin, 26, of Whitesboro, Texas, was not charged. The other driver whose car was not struck -- Benjamin Grant Harper, 17, of Connie Circle -- told police that he had the green light. No charges were filed.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car collision at 6:02 p.m. Monday in the 4700 block of U.S. 70 East, police said. One driver, Alice H. Jackson, 65, of Sleepy Creek Road, Dudley, was charged with a yield violation. Police said Ms. Jackson was leaving a restaurant parking lot and an eastbound driver, Amy Caroline Smith, 21, of McCullen Lane, Dudley, could not stop in time.
*Both drivers were injured and damages were set at $9,500 in a two-vehicle crash at 5:37 p.m. Thursday at U.S. 117 and the entrance to Neuse River Shopping Center, the Highway Patrol said. Nell S. Burch, 67, of O'Berry Road, Mount Olive, and Robert Raymond Pruett, 45, of Forehand Road, Pikeville, were released after emergency-room treatment. No charges were filed. Troopers said Ms. Burch was turning left into the parking lot, and Pruett was going north.
Jewelry stolen
About $4,600 worth of jewelry was stolen Monday after three windows were smashed at a home in the 2700 block of Billy Francis Drive, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The jewelry included two diamond rings, two wedding bands, a gold necklace, four gold bracelets and three pairs of earrings. A video-game player, worth $200, also was reported stolen. Damage was estimated at $400 at the M.D. Montgomery home.
Wayne County law-enforcement officers also are investigating these reports:
*A combination radio and compact disc player was stolen between Friday and Monday from a car in the 200 block of Mobile Circle, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to enter the car. The owner, Marilyn Lane of Dudley, said her property was worth $600. Damage was estimated at $700.
*Two generators were stolen between June 13 and Monday from a garage in the 2200 block of Granville Drive, police said. The resident, Robert Logan, said the generators were valued at $1,200.
*Damage was estimated at $2,500 to a drink machine in the parking lot at Goldsboro High School, police said. Someone had tried to enter the machine between Friday and Monday but was not successful.
Call solves theft
An anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers has enabled the Wayne County Sheriff's Office to arrest two people and recover more than $5,300 worth of property stolen from Eastern Wayne High School.
Detective Robert Chunn arrested Christopher Scott Wilson, 18, and Brandon Michael Eberst, 18, both of Cuyler Best Road, and charged them breaking and entering and larceny. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond. The break-in occurred May 25.
Correction
A report in the June 21 News-Argus about a series of vehicle break-ins in Rosewood contained wrong information from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. A victim whose property was stolen had bought the items in Kmart, not Wal-Mart. She had asked store officials to call the Sheriff's Office if anyone tried to return the property for a refund. When a suspect did ask for a refund, he was arrested later.
