Fireworks Saturday

The Mount Olive Jaycees will sponsor a fireworks display Saturday instead of Sunday, July 4.

Jaycee President Karen Bass said the display will begin at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Mount Olive Municipal Airport, because July 4 is falling on a Sunday.

The same company will provide the show that has for the past several years.

Classes for your dog

Wayne Community College Continuing Education is offering two sessions of its six-week dog obedience course.

The first will be held from 7-8 p.m. on Thursdays beginning July 1, with Saturday classes from 9-10 a.m. beginning July 3.

Humans and their canines can register and pay the $40 fee at the first class held on the grounds at the college's main campus in Goldsboro.

Gas prices come down

After extremely high prices all year, gasoline prices in the Carolinas have dropped almost a dime from the record high set May 28, spurring an expected 1.66 million Carolinians to travel this weekend.

While the drop has been welcomed by motorists, gas prices are still $1.86 in North Carolina and $1.81 in South Carolina, 45 cents and 46 cents higher respectively than last year's July Fourth holiday, according to AAA Carolinas.

More than 1.5 million Carolinians are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home by auto, up 5 percent from the 1.45 million who traveled last year.

Nearly 140,000 Carolinians are expected to fly this weekend. That number sends air travel up 2.4 percent from last year, making Independence Day the third holiday in a row to see rebounding numbers in air travel.

Gas prices have been dropping since May 28 when prices peaked at $1.96 in North Carolina and $1.90 in South Carolina, the AAA reported.
