WCC expands student center

Wayne Community College Ed Wilson had a roll of quarters and said he was ready to use them.
He challenged Student Government Association President Uvette Johnson to the first game of pool in the newly renovated student activities center, unveiled during ceremonies Friday morning.
Dr. Wilson said he would pay for the first round of games during the reception. Other administrators also took on challengers at the four new pool tables, new air hockey table, four video game machines, and the school's well-loved and well-worn pingpong table.
The latest construction project at the college features a 2,800-square-foot center, expanded by more than 1,000 feet. It was funded by state bonds passed by voters in 2000.
The firm of Partin and Hobbs did the architectural work on the project that began in January.
"This past school year, students have had a cramped makeshift lounge," Wilson said. "We hope they'll find it more than worth the wait."
He said the new space is beautiful and will create a sense of community among the students. In addition to the games are food vending machines and a lounge area that features 14 new tables, two sofas and eight chairs.
Ms. Johnson said the refurbished center, with its gold-colored walls, is more appealing and attractive.
"It was transformed right before our eyes," she said.
She said many activities will be planned in the larger center.
"We hope to be seeing it as a place where the students can come and relax and enjoy themselves," she said.
Wilson added in a scholarly tone, "And don't forget to include studying."
Two distinctive elements have also been retained to the center, Wilson said.
"The college mascot bison head has been refurbished and has a place of honor in a new trophy case," he said.
Likewise, wood paneling was removed, refinished and re-installed.
