Sager's goal to insure fiscal responsibility

Wayne County Commis-sioner Efton Sager promises to continue to promote fiscal responsibility if he's re-elected this year.
Keeping the county in good financial shape is the biggest challenge facing the county board, Sager said in a campaign statement this week.
"Even though it's important to set priorities and have a sound financial plan, many compromises must be made," Sager said. "Everything must be tempered with good judgment, ensuring the best use of tax dollars."

He continued, "There is a critical need for balance, ensuring taking care of real needs and keeping the tax rate as low as possible."
Sager advocates the "We concept," he said. "Nothing can be accomplished by one board. It will take the working together of all boards and committees for goals to be achieved."
Sager, a Republican, was first elected to the county board in 2000 after also running in 1996. His Democratic opponent is Mark Hood, a political newcomer.
Sager has served as the chairman of the county's education committee. He also serves on the education committee for the N.C. Association of County Commissioners. He and fellow commissioner J.D. Evans have served on a committee that chose high school students for N.C. Teaching Fellows scholarships, which pay college tuition for people entering the teaching profession.
He has also served on the Wayne County Board of Health, the Goldsboro-Wayne committee, and the solid waste committee.
He has been a resident of the Mar-Mac community for 38 years. An Air Force veteran, he volunteered to serve in Korea and Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star for the latter service.
Prior to being a commissioner, he serve as a member of the Southern Wayne Sanitary District, the Wayne County Republican Party Executive Committee, and the board of directors for Seymour Johnson Credit Union. He currently is a member of the supervisory committee for the N.C. Federal Credit Union.
Sager is a graduate of Wayne Community College and is the business manager for J.W. Logging Inc. He is a member of Brogden United Methodist Church, where he also serves as chairman of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee.
He and his wife, Deloris, have been married 51 years. They have two children, David Sager of Goldsboro and Debra Kornegay of Hillsborough, and two grandchildren, LeeAnn Sager, a rising freshman at Charles B. Aycock High School, and Jacob Kornegay, a rising sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
