CPR, first aid courses
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will offer CPR and first aid classes throughout the summer.
The three-night classes will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. at the chapter house, 600 N. George St. Monday nights will be adult CPR. Tuesday nights will be infant and child CPR. Wednesday nights will be basic first aid.
People may choose to take one, two or all three of the classes. The cost is $35 for one night, $50 for two nights and $65 for all three nights. Those interested must preregister and prepay.
Following is the schedule for the rest of the year:
*July 19, 20 and 21. The deadline to register is July 16.
*Aug. 16, 17 and 18. The deadline to register is Aug. 13.
*Sept. 20, 21 and 22. The deadline to register is Sept. 17.
*Oct. 18, 19 and 20. The deadline to register is Oct. 15.
*Nov. 15, 16 and 17. The deadline to register is Nov. 12.
*Dec. 6, 7 and 8. The deadline to register is Dec. 3.

Fan relief
Operation Fan-Relief is now in the 18th year in Duplin County.
The county Services for the Aged office has purchased fans, which may be borrowed for the summer and returned in September. These fans are available for people with low incomes who are over 60 years old.
A limited supply of these fans are available to all Progress Energy customers, on a first come first serve basis.
Services for the Aged is also requesting additional donations of electric fans, air conditioners or cash to purchase them. Anyone wishing to make donations to Operation Fan Relief may contact Services for the Aged at 910-296-2140.
Alzheimer's Support Group to meet
KENANSVILLE -- The Alzheimer's Support Group will meet at the Duplin County Senior Center at 213 Seminary St. in Kenansville at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6.
The Alzheimer's Support Group is made up of families, friends, caregivers and others who meet to share their feelings, experiences and information and to exchange coping skills with one another. The purpose of the support group is to provide "someone to stand by you" for individuals and families and to learn more about Alzheimer's and how it affects families and communities. Head Start applications being accepted
WAGES Head Start and Early Head Start will take enrollment applications June 22 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Royal Avenue Center, 601 E. Royall Ave., and the Carver Center, 612 S. Breazeale Ave., Mount Olive.
These are comprehensive child development and school readiness programs that provide services to pregnant women, young children. and children with special needs and their families.
When enrolling, the following documents will need to be taken: child's birth certificate, parents' and child's Social Security card, income verification such as W-2s or current check stub, child's shot records, child's current physical with doctor's signature, child's current Medicaid card or private insurance card, parent's Medicaid card or private insurance card for children birth to 3 years old, verification of child's special needs and food stamp verification letter and id number.
