Farmers to get their day at Aycock

FREMONT -- Life was different when there were no grocery stores to buy soap or department stores to buy clothes. Visitors can learn more about farm life in the 1800s at the Gov. Charles B. Aycock Birthplace on Saturday when the state historic site presents Farmer's Day from 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m.
Visitors will learn how lye soap was made and how a spinning wheel turned cotton into thread. They will experience 19th century transportation by taking a horse-drawn wagon ride, and learn about basket weaving, quilting and 19th century toys. There will also be a petting zoo.
Visitors can try corn shelling and grinding. For a break from the summer sun, they can cool down while listening to the Waterbound Dulcimer group in the Ida H. Williams auditorium.
Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
