Convenience centers may become less so

Wayne County's "convenience centers" may become a little less convenient. The county commissioners will decide Tuesday whether to close the trash-dumping centers on Sundays.
The change, if approved, would go into effect on Aug. 1.
The 13 sites are currently open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Cutting those hours would save $20,000 a year in paying workers to man the sites.
The commissioners are considering the move for efficiency and other reasons.
Over a three-month period, the county tracked when people came to dump trash and recyclable materials, Solid Waste Director Lloyd Cook said. The county has only been averaging a total of 40 people at all the centers on Sundays.
Many people are not aware that the centers are open seven days a week, county officials said.
Some believe they shouldn't be. "I have never felt like they should be open on Sundays," Commissioner Arnold Flowers said.
Cook said that some employees like having the hours. Many grumbled when the county cut the Sunday hours back from noon to 5 p.m.
The commissioners will convene at 8 a.m. Tuesday for a briefing on the agenda. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the commissioners' meeting room, third floor, Wayne County Courthouse Annex, 224 E. Walnut St.
