Youth conference set for Saturday

MOUNT OLIVE -- The Mount Olive Youth Awareness Conference on the law and the legal system will be held from noon until 2:15 p.m. Saturday at the Mount Olive Historic Assembly Hall, 207 Wooten St.
The conference, titled "Making Our Youth Aware of the Law," features Paul Smalley of the Mount Olive town Board of Commissioners and representatives from the Mount Olive Police Department, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, the state Highway Patrol and the Wayne County Parole Office.
Superior Court Judge Jerry Braswell will be the keynote speaker.
Organizer James Powell, a pastor in Mount Olive, says the conference is for ages 10 to 21, with emphasis on teenagers. For information, he can be reached at 751-3382.
Refreshments will be served following the program. "All are welcome to attend," said Powell, who pastors the Abundant Grace Holiness Church. The congregation meets each Sunday and Wednesday in the Historic Assembly Hall,
"This is not necessarily a church function," he said. There will be no preaching. It's a conference for all races ..."
He said participants don't have to sign in for the entire conference and can come for one or any of the presentations, which are as follows:
*Noon -- Welcome and opening.
*12:15 p.m. -- Sgt. C.J. Weaver of the Mount Olive Police Dept.
*12:30 p.m. -- Sheriff Carey Winders.
*12:45 p.m. -- State Highway Patrol Sgt. Herbert Cox.
*1 p.m. -- Parole officer Charles Williams.
*1:15 p.m. -- Judge Braswell.
* 2 p.m. Closing remarks.
