MOUNT OLIVE -- An endowment honoring Dr. Richard R. Bounds, professor of biology, has been established at Mount Olive College by several of his former students.
The earnings from the Richard R. Bounds Endowed Fund for Biology will be used to help the science and mathematics department award annual scholarships.
Christian Waters, a Mount Olive College graduate who is employed by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, said Bounds has been a major influence on the college's biology majors over the past 17 years. "An endowment in his name is a way to honor his commitment to the biology department and allow him to help students in the future. I would encourage other biology majors to contribute to this worthy fund."
Bounds earned his bachelor of science degree in biology from James Madison University in 1975, his master of science degree in botany from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1980 and his doctorate degree in botany from North Carolina State University in 1986. He joined Mount Olive College in 1987 as an associate professor of biology. He was chairman of the Department of Science and Mathematics at the college from 1992 until 2002.
