An advanced-English teacher at Southern Wayne High School has been named a 2004 Coca-Cola Educator of Distinction by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.

Freda Allen is one of 250 educators across the country chosen to receive the award that recognizes outstanding teachers. She was nominated by Sterling Tadlock, one of her students who was named a 2004 Coca-Cola Scholar.

Each year, the foundation chooses 250 outstanding high school seniors to receive college scholarships. Those students in turn nominate the teacher, coach, principal or counselor who inspired and encouraged them the most.

Tadlock, valedictorian of his class, nominated Ms. Allen. A personal message from him will be inscribed on a plaque that will be presented to her, along with a commemorative gift from Coca-Cola. Mark Davis, president of the foundation, said the award represents the selfless, hard-working and sincere dedication of the educators.

"These teachers are committed to shaping the future of America by encouraging its future leaders," he said.

The scholars foundation is a joint effort of Coca-Cola Bottlers across the United States and The Coca-Cola Company. It is supported locally by the financial commitment of local Coca-Cola Bottlers, including the Eastern Carolina Coca-Cola Bottling Co.
