Goodman's resignation official

Councilman William Goodman resigned from the Goldsboro City Council on Tuesday by sending in a one-sentence statement by fax machine.
The resignation was received around 11 a.m. Wednesday. It said, "Regretfully, I request that you accept this memo as my official resignation to the Goldsboro City Council this date, June 1, 2004."
The resignation memo had Goodman's name typed on it, but there was no signature.
Goodman pleaded guilty to obtaining property by false pretenses earlier this week and was sentenced in Wake County Superior Court to between five and six months in jail, suspended upon unsupervised probation. He also has to pay $24,000 in restitution by Friday.
Goodman was a training scheduler for the state Department of Correction until his retirement two years ago. He retired after reports surfaced that he had been fraudulently billing the state more than $24,000 for several hundred nights he spent at his mother's beach condominium.
He was originally charged with five felonies after the SBI reviewed his expense reports, but pleaded to one count of obtaining property by false pretenses.
Mayor Al King and City Manager Richard Slozak say they have not spoken with Goodman.
King said that the council would discuss on Monday how to replace Goodman, who represented District 3. The district spans parts of northern Goldsboro.
