Apartment fire
Unattended cooking was blamed Tuesday for a fire that damaged an upstairs apartment at 605 Courtyard Circle, Goldsboro fire officials said.
No one was injured. The resident, Shashonda Williamson, escaped the fire but said she did not hear the smoke alarm.
Damage was estimated at $35,000 to the apartment and $7,000 to contents. The eight-unit apartment complex was valued at $750,000, and contents were valued at $50,000.
Fifteen firefighters answered the 5:04 p.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder truck and a command car. They arrived within four minutes and found heavy smoke. The fire was controlled in about 10 minutes. But they remained for 56 minutes to put out the fire, search and ventilate the building, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Fire Lt. Frank Sasser said the downstairs apartment had minor water damage, and the two adjoining apartments had smoke damage.
Man found
The body of a 26-year-old Wilson County man was found Monday in woods near Polly Watson and Spencer roads in northwestern Wayne County, officers said Tuesday.
The victim was identified as Timothy Wayne Wright of 6071 Wiggins Mill Road, Wilson.
Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Darren Craig found an abandoned car on Spencer Road and said the owner had been reported missing.
Sheriff's deputies and a Wilson police officer with a search dog then began looking for the man. Officer Al Crouse and his dog Maximus found Wright's body about 200 yards from the car in thick woods.
The cause of death will be determined in an autopsy, but Wright did not die from a criminal act, Sheriff's Capt. George Raecher said.
Man wanted
A 22-year-old man from Dudley is wanted by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office on felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and two counts of discharge of a weapon into occupied property.
Garner
Quanta Keniel Garner on Friday was accused of firing a weapon into a mobile home on Jenny Lane and striking his uncle, Lonnie Garner, in his hip. Garner was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Two other mobile homes in the same park also were damaged in the shooting.
Quanta Garner then fled. He should be considered armed and dangerous, officers said.
Detectives were notified that he was seen Saturday in Greenville.
Anyone with information on Quanta Garner's location was asked to call the Wayne County Sheriff's Office at 731-1481 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for a cash reward.
Neighbors fight
An argument between two women on Tuesday turned violent, according to Goldsboro police. Both were later charged in the assault.
Camesha La-tay Hines, 21, told police that she had argued with Pauleshia Jacquell Ruffin, 17, in the 900 block of Fairview Circle, where they live. Then, police said, Ms. Ruffin pulled a knife, stabbed Ms. Hines and fled.
Ms. Hines was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, treated in the emergency-room and released.
Police later arrested Ms. Ruffin and charged her with a felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill while inflicting serious injury and communicating threats. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Ms. Hines was charged with two misdemeanors, assault and assault with a deadly weapon. She was jailed in lieu of a $3,500 secured bond.
Fire
A front-end loader valued at $139,000 was destroyed in a fire of undetermined causes, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
The loader, owned by Mar Mac Sand and Gravel Co., was burned at a construction site at 226 Old Grantham Road, deputies said. The fire had started near the rear transmission. Mar Mac volunteer firefighters and sheriff's fire investigators responded.
Four hurt in wrecks
Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $39,800 in six recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $5,300 in a hit-and-run collision at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway near the North William Street exit, Goldsboro police said. Ebony Marquita Edwards, 20, of Kinston was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Police said a car merging from the exit ramp collided with Ms. Edwards' eastbound car, knocking it off the right side and into a sign and a fence. The other driver fled.
*Damages were estimated at $10,000 at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wayne Memorial Drive and Cox Boulevard, police said. Mary Best Adams, 41, of Daughtry Field Road, Mount Olive, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Police said Ms. Adams had pulled from Cox Boulevard and her van collided with a northbound pickup driven by Willie Aaron Fuller, 61, of Hare Road.
*A passenger was injured and damages were set at $7,000 at 1:17 p.m. Sunday at U.S. 117 and Old Mount Olive Road, the Highway Patrol. Reginald Pearsall, 47, of Temple Hills, Md., was released after emergency-room treatment. He was riding with Mary O. Pearsall, 45, of Durham Lake Road, Dudley. Ronnie McKinney, 56, of Courtland Place, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end wreck.
*Damages were put at $7,500 at noon Sunday at U.S. 13 and Saulston Road, the Highway Patrol said. Georgia B. Boggs, 32, of Robersonville, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. Lawrence Keith Bonner, 38, of Heron Drive, was slowing to make a left turn.
*A driver escaped injury in a one-car wreck at 4 a.m. Sunday on Lancaster Road near Airport Road, the Highway Patrol said. Marcus Antonio McClain, 32, of Greensboro, was going north, and the car that he was driving ran off the right side and struck a ditch. No charges were filed. Damage was fixed at $6,000.
*Two people were injured and their car was demolished at 7:10 p.m. Friday on Morris Road near Nahunta Road, the Highway Patrol said. David Warren Lauderdale, 20, of Ennis, Texas, and his passenger, Jeremiah Miller, 19, of Wilson, were released after emergency-room treatment. Lauderdale was charged with exceeding a safe speed after his car ran off the left side, struck a ditch and overturned. The car was valued at $4,000.
Cement mixer taken
A cement mixer and a floor fan were stolen from a fenced area at W.P. Rose Co. at 710 N. James St., a Goldsboro police report said. The property was valued at $3,000.
Correction
Bill Kearney, who was stabbed early Sunday by another man, was injured at the Economy Inn, not the Wayne Motel, as was reported in Monday's News-Argus. The other man was charged with a felony assault.
