Military display
A special military display has been set up at the main post office on William Street.
The display, which will be at the post office for the next month, is in remembrance of war heroes. The memorabilia was collected by Barbara Kaspick.
Ms. Kaspick, a 17-year employee of the postal service, enjoys organizing and displaying her collections. The post office is also selling military stamps such as the Purple Heart, the World War II Memorial stamp and other stamps that give honor to our veterans.
Starling in hospital
Willie Ray Starling of Mount Olive, a legislative candidate, has been bitten by a brown recluse spider and is undergoing treatment at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Starling was admitted to the hospital Saturday night. He said today that he hopes to be discharged Wednesday, but doctors were uncertain. A surgeon has opened and cleaned the wound, and Starling is being treated with antibiotics and therapy. He said doctors told him there was a possibility that he could lose a toe.
The bite probably occurred Tuesday, Starling said.
Starling is a candidate in the Republican primary against Rep. Stephen A. LaRoque of Kinston. He said he would resume campaigning as soon as he gets out of the hospital.
Workplace workshop
The Southeastern Regional American Correctional Association is holding a one-day workshop Friday, "Meeting Today's Challenges in the Workplace."
The workshop will begin at 8 a.m. and last until 4:30 p.m. It will be held at Herman Park.
Morning speakers include Dan Stieneke, chief deputy secretary, Department of Correction, and Art Beehler, warden, Federal Medical Center at the Federal Prison in Butner.
Afternoon speakers will be William Dudley, chief deputy secretary of Crime and Public Safety; Cheryl Fellers, equal employment officer, Title VII director; and Dan Lilly, from the Department of Correction.
The cost for the workshop is $12.
