Summer school begins at Eastern Wayne High, sessions at other schools to follow

Summer school began today at one high school, and others will follow suit next week.
Eastern Wayne High School has scheduled its summer session from June 1-11 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.
Southern Wayne, Goldsboro, and Charles B. Aycock high schools will hold classes from June 7-18. Rosewood and Spring Creek students will participate in the program offered at Southern Wayne.
Classes at Southern Wayne will be held from 8-11 a.m. each day. At Goldsboro, the schedule will be from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Charles B. Aycock will offer a choice of sessions, either 8:30-11:30 a.m. or 12:30-3:30 p.m.
Students in grades 3, 5, and 8 will attend summer school from June 7 to 25 at either Brogden or Greenwood middle schools, daily from 9 a.m. until noon. Testing dates are scheduled for June 23, 24, and 25.
Dr. Sandra McCullen, associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said the sessions only seem as though they are starting earlier this. Because of snow days this year, schools across the county were dismissed later than usual.
The state-mandated summer remediation effort for elementary and middle students is part of the student accountability program. Students who did not reach the required level on the end-of-grade tests in math or reading will be given additional assistance before re-taking the standardized tests.
Students in those grades are required by law to pass the end-of-year tests in order to be promoted to the next grade.
Dr. McCullen urged parents and students with questions to contact their principals with any questions about the school system's summer program.
"They're the ones who make the final decision about promotions and retention," she said.
