Student's artwork featured on billboards

A Norwayne Middle School sixth-grader's artwork was recently featured on four local billboards designed to increase public awareness of child abuse and neglect prevention.
Shelby Briggs won the second-annual poster contest sponsored by Wayne County's For Children Council, a local collaboration of WAGES, Wayne County Partnership for Children, Wayne County Cooperative Extension, Goldsboro Exchange Club and several other local agencies.
For placing first in the contest, Shelby won a bicycle, a $100 savings bond and the honor of having her artwork featured on billboards across the county.
Other winners were Lauren Pettit, an eighth-grade student at Grantham School who finished second and received a $75 savings bond, and Taylor Scott, a seventh-grader at Grantham who finished third and received a $50 savings bond.
Verna Best, the community services block grants manager for WAGES, said the council felt it was a good idea for young people to be involved in promoting child abuse prevention.
"We wanted to have children tell us what they believe makes happy, healthy families across the county," she said.
