Arts Council approves budget

The Arts Council of Wayne County Board of Directors approved a proposed budget of $221,000 for next fiscal year.
The action was taken Thursday afternoon at the board's monthly meeting at the art center.
Among the planned revenue are $30,000 from the annual fund drive; $35,000 from grants; and $32,000 from the "When Pigs Fly" fund-raiser.
Among the planned expenses are $98,275 for salaries and $18,750 each for art classes and for gallery, art market and juried art show expenses.
*In other business, it was announced that Ven Faulk, Geoff Hulse and Bryan Sutton have agreed to serve as members of the Arts Council board if elected. People who have agreed to serve on the executive board are Richard Hunt, president; Mary Lee Flowers, vice president; Martha Bryan, secretary; Gwyn Wilson, treasurer; and Ron Taylor, past president. The election will be held at the annual meeting on June 24.
Arts Council Executive Director Alice Strickland said that Mary Regan, executive secretary of the North Carolina Arts Council, will be the guest speaker.
*The "When Pigs Fly" public art and fund-raising project is continuing to receive enthusiastic response. Richard Lambert showed fellow board members a poster and passed out bookmarks made by Seymour Johnson Air Force Base that featured art work depicting the Bomber Pig sculpture. The sculpture was unveiled late Thursday morning at the base library. The library has put together a reading program for children that will have the "When Pigs Fly" theme and includes a song written to complement that theme.
Phyllis Woodard, head of the "When Pigs Fly" project, said the sculpture called "Hogs and Kisses" will be unveiled Wednesday at Southern National Bank in Seven Springs. She also said the Bikini Pig sculpture is ready and may be placed in the fountain at the Arts Council.
