Marijuana plants found
Thirty-one small marijuana plants have been destroyed near Seven Springs by authorities after an anonymous tip to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers.
The seedlings were about four inches tall and were ready to be transplanted to permanent locations. They were found by Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad officers near Cornerstone Mobile Home Park.
If the plants had been allowed to grow to maturity, they would have had an estimated street value of $74,400. An investigation into the ownership of the plants is continuing.
Heroin charge
A 42-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Monday night by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony drug offense.
Derak Andre Collins of South Leslie Street was charged with possession with intent to sell heroin. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
Fire truck hit
A Goldsboro fire truck was damaged Monday in a collision with a car on North Center Street, south of Walnut Street, a police report said.
The fire truck, driven by Bryan William Stewart, 35, of Goldsboro, was going north at about 2 p.m., when a car backed from an angled parking place, police said.
The other driver, Mary Beth Cardin, 16, of Sanderson Road, Seven Springs, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
Damage was estimated at $3,500 to the fire truck and $1,500 to the car that Ms. Cardin was driving.
In other collisions:
*Three people were injured and a sport utility vehicle was demolished in a wreck at 2:29 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 117 near Old Mount Olive Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Maria Ivett DeLeon, 22, of Willow Road, Dudley, and two passengers, Pedro Gonzalez, 38, of Raleigh and Angel DeLeon, 18, of Willow Lane, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Maria DeLeon was charged with reckless driving. Troopers said she had been arguing with a passenger and the SUV ran off the left side, crossed the median and the southbound lanes and struck a guard rail. The SUV was valued at $6,000; damage to the rail was set at $3,000.
*A car was demolished in a wreck at 1 a.m. Sunday at Durham Lake and Nugget Drive, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Gordon Keith Adams, 16, of Stanley Chapel Church Road, Dudley, was charged with reckless driving and no operator's license. Troopers said the car that he was driving ran off the left side, struck a mail box, then careened back across the road and struck a house. The car was valued at $5,000. Damage to the house and mail box was put at $10,000.
*Damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 11:40 a.m. Thursday on Nahunta Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Robert Brent Campbell, 20, of Tedder Road, Lucama, was starting to pass a northbound pickup, troopers said, as the other driver, Bobby Gene Benton, 68, of Airport Road, Pikeville, was starting a left turn to a driveway. Neither driver was charged.
*Damages were estimated at $9,000 in a car-truck crash at 12:30 p.m. May 17 at U.S. 13 and Loop Road, the Highway Patrol said. A northbound driver, Joseph Scurto, 63, of Raleigh, was charged with a yield violation. Troopers said Scurto had stopped and then started a left turn and his car collided with an eastbound pickup driven by Roy Clayton Mills, 73, of Mills Road.
Sex charges
A Goldsboro man was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with six felony sex offenses.
Jose Alberto Coello-Diaz, 36, of "A" Street was charged with two counts each of a second-degree rape, a second-degree sexual offense and an attempted second-degree sexual offense. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 secured bond. Coello-Diaz was accused of assaulting a woman in his home, police said.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Copper tubing, a drill, a power saw, a power tool and a pellet gun were stolen between Saturday and Monday from Goldsboro Tin Shop at 804 W. Grantham St. The property was valued at $2,130. The thief had damaged a garage door in order to take the property, police said.
*A woman awoke early today and saw a man in her home. The intruder then fled with her purse that had $140 and personal papers. The resident, Nikoya Waters of Evans Street, then called police. Other property that did not belong to her was recovered on her porch and kept as evidence.
Clothing stolen
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Clothing, 15 pairs of shoes, 15 hats and eight purses were stolen Monday after a window was smashed and a door was damaged in a home in the 800 block of Sandhill Drive. The resident, Quincy Adam Stephens, estimated the value of the stolen property at $6,265 and damages at $200.
*About 600 feet of welding cable was stolen between Friday and Monday from a building at General Industries at 3048 Thoroughfare Road. The cable was valued at $1,200. No sign of forced entry was found.
