Patrick Farrell
Capt. Patrick Farrell, a flight instructor with the 333rd Fighter Squadron at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, has earned the Secretary of the Air Force Leadership Award.
He attended the five-week Squadron Officer School last November at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama.
The awards are given annually to honor the Professional Military Education graduate who demonstrated the greatest leadership while attending Squadron Officer School. Farrell was the top student out of eight classes of up to 400 officers and will receive the award on Tuesday at Maxwell Air Force Base.
Flight commanders evaluate each student in areas of leadership, team building, problem solving, communication skills and physical conditioning. These areas, along with peer recognition and the student's performance in academic testing, compromise the leadership-performance score.
Charles Bowles
Navy Airman Charles A. Bowles, son of Donna S. Bowles of Goldsboro, recently participated in Operation Vigilant Resolve, while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, homeported in Norfolk, Va.
During the operation, Strike Fighter Squadron 131 and Carrier Air Wing Seven, launched F/A-18 Hornets from Bowles' ship and conducted a 20-mm strafing run against an enemy position and dropped two 500-pound laser guided bombs on another enemy position in Fallujah, Iraq.
Beau Altman
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Beau T. Altman, son of Helen M. and Gary W. Chris Williams
Army Sgt. Christopher J. Williams has returned to Vilseck, Germany, after being deployed to an overseas forward-operating location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The soldier is regularly assigned to the 94th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy).
Williams, a carpentry and masonry specialist, is the son of Philistine Williams of Fremont, and stepson of Chris Scarborough of Wallace. He is a 1997 graduate of James Kenan High School, Warsaw.
Jeffrey Sutton
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Jeffrey Sutton, a 1987 graduate of North Lenoir High School, La Grange, is currently in the middle of a routine, scheduled deployment to the Mediterranean Sea while assigned to the guided missile destroyer USS Cole, homeported in Norfolk, Va.
Sutton's ship is part of the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group, deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Jason Mozingo
Coast Guard Seaman Jason L. Mozingo, a 2003 graduate of North Lenoir High School, LaGrange, recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J.
During the eight-week training program, Mozingo completed a vigorous training curriculum consisting of academics and practical instruction on water safety and survival, military customs and courtesies, seamanship skills, first aid, fire fighting and marksmanship, with a major emphasis on physical fitness, health and wellness.
Deborah Gates
Deborah Joan Gates has joined the United States Army and is scheduled to report for basic training at Fort. Jackson, S.C., in August
The daughter of Deborah Dyess, she will graduate from Eastern Wayne High School this week.
Matthew Moore
Army Pvt. Matthew H. Moore has graduated from the multichannel transmission systems operator-maintainer course at Fort Gordon, Augusta, Ga.
The 12-week course is designed to train enlisted soldiers in the installation, operation and unit maintenance of line-of-sight multichannel radio relay and multiplexing equipment used in telephone and telegraph communications systems. The students also receive instruction in electronic countermeasures, signal operating instructions, radio and multiplexing equipment, antennas and power generation equipment.
Moore is the son of Diann and Odell Moore of N. George St., Goldsboro. His wife, Amy, is the daughter of Carlene Cordon of Thomasville.
The private is a 1999 graduate of Goldsboro High School.
