Mabry named one of 10 correction officers of the year

Donald Mabry, an intake officer at Neuse Correctional Institution in Goldsboro, has been named a state Department of Correction officer of the year.
Mabry and the nine other officers nominated were honored last week.
Mabry, a native of Rocky Mount and an Air Force veteran, was nominated for his high productivity and exceptional work.

As an intake officer, he processes new inmates who have been sentenced to state prisons after being convicted of misdemeanor offenses.
When the prison was understaffed, Mabry volunteered to work overtime to ensure that all new inmate arrivals were processed the same day, officials said.
"He seeks solutions to problems he encounters without being told to do so and works to keep the processing area operating smoothly and efficiently," wrote Capt. Glen Britt in his recommendation of Mabry.
Mabry often handles both the yard and intake duty stations during staff shortages, Britt said.
"Officer Mabry's work ethic along with his dedication has enabled us to complete the large volume of work facing the intake area each day," Britt wrote.
Mabry joined the Correction Department in 1993 and helped in the opening of Neuse Correctional Institution on Stevens Mill Road. He served in the Air Force from March 1981 to September 1993.
