Pipe collapse causes pothole

A street cave-in at the corner of Ash and William streets was probably caused by the collapse of a storm sewer pipe, said city General Services Director Joe Sawyer.
The storm sewer system transports rainwater via pipes under the road to the nearest ditch.

Since those streets are state-maintained, Sawyer said, he would contact the state Department of Transportation about the problem.
"If it was the sanitary sewer system, the city would be responsible for fixing the pipes, even on a state road," Sawyer explained. "But based on the location of the cave-in, we think it's storm sewer."
It's the second time in a week that there has been a cave-in on a street in the city.
Last week a man blamed a hole in the street near the intersection of Andrews and Pine Streets for causing $200 worth of damage to his car.
Sawyer said the city fixed that hole, which was caused by a faulty pipe connection, because those were city streets.
