Caroline E. Holzkamm, a sophomore at North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, was presented the James R. Hailey Leadership and Service Award. The award, which usually goes to a senior, was presented at the Honors Convocation Ceremony on May 8.
Miss Holzkamm is president of Alpha Sigma Tau, treasurer of the Greek Council, serves as a resident assistant and head committee leader of Edgecombe dorm, as well as a Student Ambassador and an orientation leader. She is the pianist for the Refuge Clubs, works in the admissions department on campus and volunteers at Assault Haven in Rocky Mount. She is a 2002 graduate of Faith Christian Academy and is the daughter of Jayne Lowrimore Holzkamm of Princeton.
Nathan Blount, a student at Charles B. Aycock High School, has been named a United States National Award winner in mathematics by the U.S. Achievement Academy. Nominated by Theresa McGee, a teacher at the school, he will be featured in the academy's official yearbook.
He is the son of Mark and Emilee Blount of Goldsboro. His grandparents are Bill and Virginia Posey of Goldsboro and Ray Blount of Edmond, Okla.
A former Wayne County resident has been successful in getting her daughter's teacher recognized in a national program.
The program is sponsored by Target stores as part of National Teacher Appreciation Week.
Pepper Capps Hill, a Charles B. Aycock High School graduate, nominated teacher Mary Terese Deegan for the honor, and she was one of four chosen from 1,300 entries.
The third-grade teacher will receive $1,000 from Target. She received a three-day trip to Minnesota and a $50 gift card.
Grace Capps is Mrs. Hill's daughter. Mrs. Hill and her husband, Jerry, live in Rocky Point.
Mrs. Hill is the daughter of Grace and Billy Capps of Pikeville.
She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and is a substitute teacher.
Mrs. Hill was so inspired by the influence Ms. Deegan had on her daughter she felt compelled to share her story. Mrs. Hill describes Ms. Deegan's teaching style as "a perfect combination of experience, competency and compassion," calling her "a teacher to never forget" who "nourished my daughter's brain and nurtured her spirit."
According to Mrs. Hill, her daughter, two years after being in Ms. Deegan's class, still "smiles at the sound of her voice and tears up at the sight of her picture."
Ms. Deegan currently teaches at Grady Brown School, but often visits her former students at Cape Fear Elementary. Ms. Deegan has been an educator for 18 years.
William Smith has been accepted to attend the 10th Annual Free Enterprise Leadership Conference sponsored by The Jesse Helms Center. He will attend a one-week session at Wingate University.
During the conference, high school sophomores, juniors and seniors form across the state will learn about the opportunities available through the free enterprise system. They will form their own "companies" to manufacture products or provide services. Topics will include marketing, production, profit and loss, and taxes.
Smith is the son of Christopher and Jesse Smith and is a student at Southern Wayne High School.
Christian Brookx Peele of Goldsboro, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Peele, received the Student Service Award at the annual Honors Convocation at Mary Baldwin College.
Eugene G. Purcell IV of Goldsboro accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during a campus ceremony this fall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The national honors organization recognizes first and second year undergraduate students who excel academically.
Laura Bennett, daughter of Selena and Gordon Bennett of Mount Olive, has been elected by the student body at Saint Mary's School in Raleigh to serve as a marshal for the 2004-2005 academic year.
Miss Bennett is a rising senior at the Raleigh boarding school.
The marshals serve as ushers at graduation, chapel services, concerts and assemblies and serve as hostesses for special campus events throughout the academic year.
Mario K. Re graduated on May 7 from East Carolina University with a master's degree in school administration.
Cynthia Sullivan Alligood, Major Foy Ivey III, Brian Douglas Jones and Eva Ashley King of Mount Olive earned all A's for the spring semester and are on the President's List at James Sprunt Community College.
Pearlie Nicole Ammons, also of Mount Olive, had between a 3.50 and a 3.99 grade point average and is on the college's Dean's List.
Jessica Lynn Newsome, who is a junior at Appalachian State University was recently inducted into Alpha Chi Honor Society. She is the daughter of Mark and Regina Newsome of Pikeville and the granddaughter of W. H. "John" and Faye Hargrove of Mount Olive and Lou Newsome Sasser of Pikeville.
Samuel Barrett Schafer II of Goldsboro received a bachelor of business administration degree in finance from Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C., during commencement exercises on May 8.
