College publishes another magazine

After 20 years, Renaissance magazine is still showcasing Wayne Community College's writers' and artists' talent.
The 2004 issue contains 60 pages with more than 100 pieces of prose, poetry and art by 34 of the college's curriculum students and 11 members of the faculty and staff.
At the magazine's annual unveiling and awards ceremony, Co-Editor Rosalyn Lomax said that selecting the works for the magazine is difficult and that it is an honor for the writers and artists to be published in Renaissance.
Art submissions were displayed in a conference room during the selection process, prompting many faculty and staff members to comment, "Oh, I wish I owned that," said Co-Editor Kathryn Spicer.
"One of the most exciting moments is seeing the people whose work we have enjoyed for months," Mrs. Lomax said.
Awards for outstanding student work were presented to Karen Heron, an associate in arts major, for the publication's cover design; Mike Elliott, an associate in arts major, best art; Ina Royer, an associate in arts major, best short story for the second consecutive year; and Virginia Summers, a medical office administration major, best essay.
In addition to Mrs. Lomax and Mrs. Spicer, Paula Sauls also serves as co-editor. Marian Westbrook is editor emerita. All are English instructors at the college.
Renaissance was first published with Bill Bennett, Anne Croom, Liz Meador and Marian Westbrook heading up as the editorial staff. The 39-page magazine sported a cover with a college that included Cupid and Venus, in their classic state of undress. Mrs. Meador reported that then-President Clyde Erwin found the cover a bit "racy" and so made the maiden more modest with strategic placement of his hand.
A number of staff and faculty members who contributed to the first issue still work at the college, including Mr. Bennett, Paul Compton, Dot Elledge, Mrs. Lomax, Grace Lutz, Mrs. Meador, and Ms. Westbrook. Three of them had works published in this year's edition.
