Against mandatory minimums

Families Against Mandatory Minimums is sponsoring a public meeting Saturday in Goldsboro.

FAMM is a national nonprofit organization founded in 1991 by lawyers, judges, criminal justice experts and the families of inmates. It says it fights excessive penalties from mandatory minimum sentencing policies. It promotes flexible sentencing laws that give judges the discretion to distinguish between defendants and sentence them according to their culpability.

People are encouraged to attend the meeting if they have a loved one or know someone who is incarcerated in the federal prison system serving a mandatory sentence or those who are concerned about minimum sentences.

The meeting will be at Madison's restaurant at 413 New Hope Road in Goldsboro. For more information, call Lafonda Jones at 530-8077 or Pam Oliver at 734-9470.
