Thirty-nine student artists were recognized during the annual Visual Art Awards reception held last week at the Community Arts Council.
Martha Kornegay, an art teacher at Charles B. Aycock High School, was also honored as the Zeno Spence High School Art Educator for 2003-2004.
For 13 years, the Community Arts Council in cooperation with the Wayne County public schools has sponsored the awards reception.
Dr. Steven Taylor, superintendent of Wayne County public schools, welcomed the students, parents and educators in attendance. He said the arts are critical to the educational process of many youngsters.
Hope Meyerhoeffer, the school district's director of visual arts, and Alice Strickland, director of the Arts Council, presented plaques to many of the 39 award-winning artists. The Rosewood High School Show Choir provided the evening's entertainment.
Special recognition was given in the following categories: Superintendent Art Choices, Scholastic Art Award sponsored by Barton College, top school-wide Christmas card design, and Wayne County logo.
The Superintendent's Choice Art will be displayed for a year along the hallways of the school system's administrative offices on Royall Avenue.
Also during the reception, Zeno Spence, an artist from Goldsboro for whom the award was named, presented the top Art Educator award to Ms. Kornegay. He described Ms. Kornegay as an energetic, knowledgeable and committed educator.
