The 8th Annual Hal Plonk Disability Awareness Walk will be held on Wednesday at St. Paul United Methodist Church.
The five-block walk begins at 10 a.m., but people should line up by 9:45.
The walk is an annual event sponsored by the Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities of Goldsboro.
The first Disability Awareness Walk was held in 1997, with about 250 participants. Over the last few years the number has grown to between 400 and 500 participants.
The walk is named after the late Mayor Hal Plonk, a strong supporter of the committee.
The committee was formed in the late 1970s to help the Governor's Advocacy Council for Persons with Disabilities and the President's Committee on Employment for People with Disabilities, as well as other groups that advocate for people with disabilities.
The following organizations have set up booths at the walk: Tarheel Home Health, MS Society, Nova, Altera Sterling House, Howell Support Services, Skill Creations, Wayne Community College, A Small Miracle, Goldsboro Parks and Recreation, Mt. Olive Retirement, CNC, Renu Life, Beverly Home Care, Wayne County Autistic Society, Home Health and Hospice, Alpha Omega Health, Brain Injury Network, Vocational Rehabilitation, Services for the Blind, and Wayne County Special Ministries.
