Primary needed as Chance gets Deeds opponent

The end of the filing period Friday was a relief for some county commissioners, school board members, legislators and judges who will not have challengers this year.
But it was a pain for Wayne County Register of Deeds John Chance, who now has an opponent in the Democratic primary.
Lois J. Mooring, a deputy clerk in the Clerk of Court's office, filed Friday to enter the deeds race. She described herself as "a hard-working Wayne County girl" who is running to improve her professional career while still serving local citizens.
She will now face Chance, the register since last November, in the primaries on July 20. The winner of that race will advance to meet Chris West, the Republican candidate, in November.
In another last-minute filing at the Wayne County Board of Elections, Willie Ray Starling entered the 10th District race for the N.C. House. Starling, a Republican from Mount Olive, is challenging Rep. Stephen LaRoque of Kinston in the primary.
Several candidates made it through the two-week filing period without drawing opposition. Barring write-in campaigns, they will all be re-elected in November.
They include Wayne County commissioners Andy Anderson, John M. Bell and J.D. Evans; school board members Shirley Sims and Thelma Smith; N.C. Reps. Louis Pate and Larry M. Bell; N.C. Sen. Fred Smith; and district court judges David Brantley, Lonnie Carraway, Leslie "Les" Turner, Rose Vaughn Williams and Chief Judge Joseph "Joe" E. Setzer Jr.
Duplin County
Three primaries are set for open county commissioner seats, and three Democrats are going after one of the school board seats.
Commissioners L.S. Guy and Reginald Wells face opposition in their bid for re-election. Commissioner Myrle Beringer has announced he will not run again, and two Democrats are going after his seat.
Guy, who is the chairman of the county commissioner board, faces Snodie Wilson of Kenansville in the Primary for the Democratic nomination for the District 1 seat.
Reginald Wells of Rose Hill faces Quincy Hill, also of Rose Hill in his bid for reelection to the District 6 seat on the commissioner board. The winner will face Republican Sean Knowles of Rose Hill in November.
Tommy Herring and David Fussell, both of Wallace, will be on the ballot for Commissioner District 4, the seat that is being vacated by Beringer. The winner will face Republican Ray Garriss of Wallace in November.
Democrat Zettie Williams of Magnolia is unopposed for re-election in District 5.
Board of Education members Hubert E. Bowden of Warsaw and Reginald Kenan, both Democrats, have filed for reelection to two of the three school board seats.
Three Democrats are going after the school board seat being vacated by retiring Chairman Doc Brinson. They are Gary Cook of Warsaw and Willie Gillespie and Stephen Williamson, both of Kenansville.
Register of Deeds Davis Brinson faces no opposition in his bid for re-election.
