Restaurant fire
A grease cooker at the McDonald's restaurant at 2002 Wayne Memorial Drive caught on fire before dawn today and caused an undetermined amount of damage, a Goldsboro fire official said.
Employees cleaned up the damage, and the restaurant was open for breakfast.
Assistant Fire Chief Gary Whaley said heavy smoke was showing when 18 firefighters answered the 1:04 a.m. call with four engines, a ladder truck and a command car. They remained on the scene for an hour and 12 minutes.
The building was not damaged. The fire was contained in the kitchen, Whaley said. The deep fryer was removed from the restaurant, and smoke was blown from the building.
Whaley said a thermostat may have been stuck on the cooker so that the grease became hot enough to catch on fire.
The amount of damage and the value of the building was not immediately known. The business is owned by Dixon Foods of Wilson.
Four hurt in wrecks
Four people were injured Thursday in five traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*A driver from Dudley was injured and damage were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car collision at 11:23 p.m. on Elm Street near Poplar Street, Goldsboro police said. Wilbert Lee Evans, 55, of Hopesway Drive was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. The other motorist, Darren Young, 37, of Harrell Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision.
*A westbound driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 12:56 p.m. Thursday at North William and Holly streets, police said. Justin Travis Lancaster, 16, of Moore Allen Street, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver who was going north, Michelle Lynn Leslie, 22, of Cassedale Drive, was charged with a stoplight violation.
*A bicyclist from Goldsboro was injured in a collision with a car at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Walnut and William streets, police said. Michael John Kelley, 38, of 11th Street, was released after emergency-room treatment. The driver was identified as Gregory O'Keith Jackson Jr., 21, of South Oleander Avenue. No charges were filed. Damages were set at $330.
*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 4:10 p.m. Thursday on North Berkeley Boulevard near Cashwell Drive, police said. Elma Rowe Best, 52, of Farrington Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Margaret Lee Wilkins, 19, of Pine Needles Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed as a result of the rear-end crash. Damages were put at $250.
*A Goldsboro police car and another car, both backing from adjacent parking places, sideswiped each other at noon Thursday in the Dairy Queen parking lot on Wayne Memorial Drive, police said. Neither driver -- Maj. Jay R. Memmelaar Jr., 36, of Goldsboro, nor Ernest Lee McCullen Sr., 56, of North Center Street -- was charged. Damages were estimated at $250.
Car stolen
A red, two-door 1995 Honda Civic was stolen between Monday and Thursday from Jackie's Used Cars at 2091 U.S. 70 West, a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report said. The car was valued at $4,500.
