Professor wins grant
Michael Salter, assistant professor of fine arts at Mount Olive College, has received an $8,000 grant from the N.C. Arts Council.
The grant will be used to fund work the visual artist undertakes.
Salter lives in Raleigh with his wife, Jill, and daughter, Amelie. He assists in the direction of "Lump Gallery" in Raleigh, which is devoted to upcoming artists and their work. His work will be featured in "Situations Unknown," a show at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem. The show is under way and will run until July 3.

The following is the May Bloodmobile schedule for the Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross:
May 11: Red Cross chapter house, 600 N. George St., from 2 to 6 p.m. by appointment only by calling 735-7201.
May 14: Wayne Memorial Hospital from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
May 21: Goldsboro Chevrolet Cadillac from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
May 24: McDonald's of Mount Olive from 1:30 to 6 p.m. and Seven Springs Rescue Squad from 2:30 to 7 p.m.
May 27: City of Goldsboro employees at the maintenance complex on Klingman Street from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

dinner correction
The American Legion Wayne Post Number 11 is sponsoring the dinner on Saturday to honor military spouses. The News-Argus reported Thursday that it is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, which is incorrect.
The event is part of Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Melissa Thames with the National Guard's Family Assistance Center in Goldsboro said they are expecting between 70 and 80 people for the roast beef dinner and a movie.
The free event is for spouses of National Guard troops, but it is open to all military spouses. It will be at the National Guard Armory in Goldsboro beginning at 4:30 p.m. The armory is at 700 U.S. 117 S. Bypass. Those planning to attend the dinner should let Mrs. Thames know by calling 739-5331.
The National Guard is also in need of items for care packages and money for shipping the items to the troops. Donated items can include cookies, chips, canned goods with hand-held can openers, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, books, video cassettes, DVDs and tapes. Any food that can melt, aerosol products and anything with nudity will not be accepted.
People can drop the items by the Goldsboro armory Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. For more information, call 739-5331. Cash or checks are accepted. Checks should be made payable to the 230th Family Readiness Group.
Correction
John Lewis Jr., not Mike Lewis, is a board member of Wayne County Memorial Association. The News-Argus misstated his name in a story in Thursday's edition.
