Princeton considers applying for grant to beautify downtown

PRINCETON -- The Princeton town board has been asked to apply for a federal grant to beautify downtown.
Kay Earp, the assistant town clerk, asked the board to apply for the grant that would pay for eight coated-steel benches, anchored at each end with a concrete planter, and nine trash cans to replace several damaged containers.
The project would cost $7,797. Mrs. Earp said the town's 20 percent match would be $1,559. The application deadline is June 4.
The board, holding its monthly meeting Monday night in the Community Building, said it will consider the request during its upcoming budget workshops. The next meeting was scheduled for May 11.
Meanwhile, Mayor Don Rains announced that Chuck Allen, a Goldsboro developer and councilman, had finished grading for the new Ray Floors Park, west of town.
Rains said the walking trail now can be used and only seeding remains to be finished.
Rains also announced that he had contacted Sprint about extending the local-call service to Raleigh. He said that if there is sufficient volume, Sprint will poll Princeton customers. If the service is approved, bills would go up 50 cents to $1, the mayor said.
Police Chief Eddie Lewis also announced that a new officer, Allen Lee, had resigned from the four-man staff because of personal reasons.
In other business, the board:
*Approved a plan to buy a clarifier for the sewer plant and then submit it for bids.
*Approved financing for a $500,000 loan for sewer plant repairs after a public hearing during which no one spoke.
