$127,247 raised
Buddy and Judson Pope, with help from more than 140 sponsors and a small army of volunteers, collected more than $127,247 this year from the 18th Annual Handy Mart - Mount Olive College Invitational Golf Tournament held at Southern Wayne Country Club.
This year's proceeds bring the total amount raised since the event began in 1987 to more than $1.3 million.
To date, 397 students have received financial aid in the form of scholarships from the annual Handy Mart golf tournaments. Each year half the money collected goes into an endowment, and the other half goes directly to scholarships. Interest from the endowment fund also supports scholarships.
This year's recipients are Neils Kasch of Germany; Jessica Murphy of Pikeville; Greg McDermott of Canada; Leah Humphrey of Kenansville; Shakeena Green of Beulaville; Eric Royster of Youngsville; Lindsay Snyder of Goldsboro; Rebecca Whitley of Mount Olive; Ashley Sanderson of Beulaville; Emmett Stroud of Albertson; Elton Coffield of Williamston; Tony Dowdy of Newport; Heather Faircloth of Dunn; Megan Guffey of Goldsboro; Michael Jarman of LaGrange; Andrea Houston of Goldsboro; Heather Hardison of Albertson; Scott Isenhour of Mount Olive and Brettany Albertson of Chinquapin.
Lunch and Learn
The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce will hold two Lunch and Learn seminars.
The first one is called "Chamber Marketing -- Part III," which will be on May 11 and involve evaluating opportunities in the changing marketing environment.
Part IV will be May 25 and will involve discussions of the classic 4 P's of marketing -- product, place, price and promotion.
The featured speaker is Jim Slowinski, who holds an MBA from The University of Notre Dame. He is currently a business professor at Mount Olive College and a retired executive with Packaging Corporation of America.
Seating is limited to the first 30 reservations. The fee is $10 per person per class, which includes a light lunch. For more information, call the chamber at 734-2241. The seminars will be from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the chamber's board room at 308 N. William St. in Goldsboro.
VIP awards
MOUNT OLIVE -- The Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce will present its annual Very Important Person Awards at 7 p.m. on May 11 in the Southern Wayne High School cafeteria.
The keynote speaker will be Kenney Moore, president of Andy's Cheesesteaks & Cheeseburgers.
The VIP Award was established by the chamber's Education Committee to encourage students at Southern Wayne. About 50 students will be honored during the program.
The evening will also include the presentation of the Terry McPherson Memorial Award by Southern Wayne Principal Gene Byrd, and a reception will follow the program.
The chamber and its Partner in Education, Southern Wayne, co-sponsor the event. For information, call 658-3113.
EMT certification
Wayne Community College Continuing Education is enrolling students in its next sessions of Emergency Medical Technician Basic and Intermediate training. Successful completion of these courses allow the students to take the N.C. EMT certification exams.
EMT Basic classes will be taught from 6:30-10 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays starting June 7. The EMT-Intermediate course will be taught 6:30-10 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning May 18. Both run through Dec. 7.
The courses require passage of the ASSET placement tests. The test will be given only on May 10 at 6 p.m.
