Teaching scholar
Hannah Rebecca Jernigan has been selected as an N.C. Teaching Scholarship Fellow.
She is one of 16 students in Wayne County who have been selected for the award. She is a senior at Wayne Country Day School. She plans to attend N.C. State University. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Randall Jernigan of Goldsboro.
Each Teaching Fellow receives a $26,000 scholarship loan from the state, payable in $6,500 annual increments. The full loan is forgiven after the Fellow has completed four years of teaching in North Carolina public schools.
Dress code unaltered
A move to change the educators' dress code unraveled Monday night. In other words, sorry guys, you have to keep the ties.
School board member Rick Pridgen proposed a change in the dress code that would have allowed male teachers to wear casual knit shirts during the warmer months of the school year.
The board has been united that educators set a standard of professionalism, said Stan Alleyne, public information officer for the school system. So when Pridgen made the motion, the outcome was pretty much sewn up.
"It was discussed, but it died for the lack of a second," Alleyne said.
'Extreme Makeover'
Wayne County resident Monika Barkley will be "unveiled" at 10 tonight on ABC's "Extreme Makeover" show.
Mrs. Barkley was chosen last summer to participate in Dr. Phil McGraw's weight loss challenge. As a result of her participation in the weight loss challenge, she was given an opportunity for an extreme makeover.
She spent a couple of months in California having various surgeries and treatments. The unveiling special, which was filmed last month at Billie's Restaurant in downtown Goldsboro, will be the season finale of the show.

In an effort to better serve Wayne County veterans, the Veterans' Services Office says it will now see clients by appointment only.
