The Wayne County Board of Commissioners will get a new face Tuesday, followed by some really new faces.

During the board's regular meeting, Jack Best will be sworn in as the new District 6 commissioner. Best, a former Walnut Creek commissioner, was appointed last month as Ken Gerrard's replacement and will serve until at least November, the end of Gerrard's term.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge," Best said this morning.

Tuesday is also the annual "Youth in Government Day," during which high school students come in the afternoon and hold a mock commissioners meeting. The students have been studying recent county issues and practicing several evenings. The teens' meeting will begin at 1 p.m.

The other six commissioners have all called Best to welcome him to the county board, he said. He believes he can work well with the entire board. "If they didn't have Wayne County in their hearts, they wouldn't be there," he said.

The commissioners will hold a public hearing at 9:15 a.m. to consider whether to allow car washes on land zoned for "community shopping" and "light industry."

The commissioners will convene at 8 a.m. Tuesday for a briefing on the agenda. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the commissioners' meeting room, third floor, Wayne County Courthouse Annex, 224 E. Walnut St.
