The Local Letter Carriers Food Drive will be held Saturday. The drive is part of a national effort by more than 1,500 NALC branches in the United States to fill local food banks.

Local letter carriers hope to collect 22,000 pounds of non-perishable food.

Food recipients will be the City Rescue Mission of Goldsboro, Community Soup Kitchen of Goldsboro, The Lighthouse of Wayne County, The Salvation Army, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and United Church Ministries.

Volunteers from participating agencies, area churches and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base will join carriers in sorting and loading the food. Security-Atlas Storage and The Salvation Army are lending large trucks to help in the storage and the transportation of the collected food to participating agencies.

The drive will cover residences with a Goldsboro Zip Code, including 27530 through 27534. Postal customers who would like to donate items may place them by, in or on their mailboxes.

Food drive organizers are asking patrons for non-glass containers only.

People who would like to drop food off at the William Street or Berkeley Boulevard post offices may do so during the week prior to the drive.
