Man wounded
A Goldsboro man was wounded Thursday during a fight in a parking lot, and Goldsboro police say they captured the assailant in a nearby building.
Keyshawn Carmichael Jones, 20, of South Best Street was shot while he was between the Subway and Taco Bell restaurants in the 2500 block of East Ash Street, police said. He was taken by an ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for a leg wound and released.
Jones had told police that he was knocked down during a fight and then the assailant pulled out a handgun, shot him and fled on foot.
Leslie Ray Batts, 23, of Wilson was arrested within minutes at the Boulevard Lanes at 105 S. Berkeley Blvd. He was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and misdemeanor possession of a concealed weapon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $6,000 secured bond.
Police said today that they do not believe that the shooting was related to six other shootings in the last two weeks in Goldsboro.
Another man also was injured as he tried to leave the shooting. William Douglas Tremain Barbour, 19, of Wilson reported that he was struck by another man. Barbour was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. No charges have been filed in this assault.
Officer's rifles stolen
Two rifles, a shotgun, handcuffs, a flashlight and pepper spray were stolen Thursday from the home of a state Correction Department officer, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
Jesse Earl Jernigan, who works for Johnston Correctional Institution near Smithfield, said the property was valued at $560. The thief had pried open a window at his home on Nancy Drive near Dudley to get inside.
Golf cart theft
Three 16-year-old boys have been arrested by Wayne County sheriff's officers and charged with larceny and possession of a stolen golf cart.
Christopher Dale Mooring of Stan Ray Road, Fremont; Matthew Lavonne Brantley of Moye Road, Fremont, and Joshua Linwood Robles of Bailey were placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of $10,000 secured bonds on the two felony charges.
The three allegedly stole the cart Wednesday from a home on U.S. 117, north of Fremont, Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris said. The cart was recovered and returned to the owner. Fremont police and the Wilson County Sheriff's Office assisted in the investigation.
Boy goes home
Ryan Goins, the 9-year-old Tommy's Road Elementary School student injured in a car accident that claimed his mother's life, has been released from Pitt Memorial Hospital.
Ryan had been hospitalized in Greenville since the April 5 accident on Pikeville-Princeton Road. He will reportedly move to Fayetteville to live with his father.
Driver hurt in wrecks
A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $25,250 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was injured and charged with reckless driving after a one-car wreck at 4 a.m. Thursday on Sandhill Drive near Gainey Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Jose Suarez, 22, of U.S. 13 North was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. The northbound car that he was driving ran off the left side, came back on the road out of control, ran off the left side again, struck several mail boxes and stopped in a ditch. Damages were set at $2,200.
*Damages were estimated at $10,050 in a three-car collision at 5:50 p.m. Thursday at North Berkeley Boulevard and Graves Drive, Goldsboro police said. A northbound driver, Carolyn B. Byers, 51, of Albert Drive, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Police said Ms. Byers was starting a left turn and her car collided with a southbound auto driven by Jennifer N. Schafer, 27, of Trey Drive. The impact pushed Ms. Byers' car into a stopped, eastbound auto driven by Nicholas Ryan Melvin, 21, of Hollybrook Lane, Dudley.
*Both vehicles were demolished in a crash at 10:20 a.m. April 19 at U.S. 13 and Hood Swamp Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, George Oscar Bailey, 65, of Elkton, Fla., was charged with a yield violation. Troopers said he had pulled from the side road and his sport utility vehicle collided with a northbound SUV driven by Antonio Manyel Clay, 30, of Echo Drive, LaGrange. Damages were put at $13,000.
Rape
A 20-year-old man from Dudley was arrested Thursday by the Wayne County sheriff's officers and charged with second-degree rape.
Jonathan Malachi Poppell of Swinson Drive was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond on the felony charge.
The Sheriff's Office said it received a report of a woman being raped on April 23 in the defendant's home. Poppell was charged after an investigation by Detective Mike Reid. Additional charges will be brought before the grand jury. Detective Sgt. Tony Morris assisted in the case.
Tractor stolen
A New Holland tractor and other items, valued at $28,350, were stolen Thursday from a yard in the 2600 block of Memorial Church Road, a Wayne County sheriff's report said.
The resident, Albon Q. Overman, also reported the theft of a 20-foot, tandem-axle trailer, a tiller, a box blade and used woods. The tractor was valued at $21,400.
Sheriff's deputies also are investigating these reports:
*Three rifles, a shotgun and a television were stolen between Wednesday and Thursday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Mint Hill Drive, deputies said. The resident, Francis E. Beyer Jr., said the TV was worth $300, but he did not know the value of the firearms. Damage was set at $350.
*A computer, jewelry, a video camera, a television, 20 DVDs and a drill were stolen and a safe was damaged Thursday at a home in the 100 block of Pleasant Pines Road, deputies said. The resident, Michael B. Fisher, estimated the value of his property at $4,900 and damage at $250.
Break-in
A teen-ager was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police and charged with three felony offenses -- breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods.
Cornelius Earl Jones, 16, of Evergreen Avenue was accused of taking part in a residential break-in in the 400 block of West Hooks River Road, Investigator K.S. Harris said. Most of the stolen property has been recovered. Jones was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond. Investigator M.K. Horstmann assisted in the case.
