Evans files for re-election; U.S. Rep. Jones challenged

J.D. Evans was most likely the final Wayne County commissioner to file for re-election when he did so Thursday.
U.S. Rep. Walter Jones also got a challenger Thursday in the 3rd Congressional District, which includes Wayne County.
Evans, a Democrat representing District 2, was the only candidate to file Thursday at the Wayne County Board of Elections. The filing deadline is noon Friday, May 7.

Earlier in the week, Commissioners Andy Anderson, John Bell, Atlas Price and Efton Sager had declared their intentions to return. Even Jack Best, who hasn't yet been sworn into the District 6 seat, had filed to keep the seat.
That leaves only Arnold Flowers, who has said that he doesn't intend to run again.
Evans, of Dudley, is a retired educator. He worked as a science and math teacher at the former Carver High School in Mount Olive and later as assistant principal at Southern Wayne High School. He then became director of the Diagnostic Center for the school administration.
He was appointed to the county board in mid-2000 to replace Jimmie Ford, who had become a state legislator. He was elected in November 2000 to a four-year term.
Also on Thursday, Democrat Roger Eaton of Morehead City filed as a candidate for North Carolina's 3rd District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
He will faces Walter Jones, a Republican.
