Film Festival
The Wayne County Public Library will be the host of a month-long Sherlock Holmes Film Festival, beginning Saturday.
The classic films will run every Saturday at 1:30 and every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1 p.m. Stop by the library and check at the reference desk for information on individual titles.
There will not be a show Friday, May 21. The last show of the festival will be on Wednesday, May 26. No registration is required and admission is free.
GOP delegate
New York-bound Milas Kelly Jr. of Goldsboro was elected as a delegate to the Republican Party's national convention, which will be held Aug. 29 to Sept. 2 in New York City.
Kelly was chosen as a delegate during the 1st District Republican Convention, held this month in Washington, N.C. Kelly will be making his first trip to a national convention.
"Milas has been a supportive member of the Wayne County Republican Party for many years and is deserving of this selection," said county chairman Ed Wharton. "He will represent us well in New York."
A vote that counts
Ann Sullivan of Goldsboro has been chosen by the Republican Party's 3rd District as an elector for this fall's elections.
That means she will be the party's representative at the convening of the Electoral College, following the Nov. 2 elections. Should President Bush carry the state, she will be casting one of North Carolina's 15 votes for him.
"It's the only vote that really counts," she said. "That's pretty cool."
Child safety event
Operation Child Safety will be held Sunday at Berkeley Mall to promote child safety, awareness and education.
Children and parents can also learn about safety issues for boating and swimming, fire safety, and the dangers of smoking. The free event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m.
Goldsboro police, fire and EMS workers as well as the Goldsboro Family Y and Coast Guard Auxiliary are some of the groups participating. Smokey Bear, Coastie the Robotic Tugboat and Miss Goldsboro 2002, Desiree Autry, will also attend.
At 2 p.m., a one-hour session of "Escape School," taught by a former police officer, will be offered to teach children practical techniques to avoid and escape from potential abductions.
The event is sponsored by the mall, along with Curtis Media Group, Wayne Memorial Hospital, Deacon Jones Lincoln Mercury Ford and Jameson Inn.
Tractor pull this weekend
The third annual Antique Farm Equipment Days show is coming to the Wayne County Fairgrounds this weekend, with events starting at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, featuring displays, crafts and lots of food.
Admission is $5, and children under 12 get in free.
The tractor pull is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. It is sponsored by the Duplin Antique Tractor Pullers Association. The tractor pulls normally last until about 11:30 p.m., said McGinnis.
Jerry McGinnis, president of the Eastern Carolina Vintage Farm Equipment Club, says adults will love seeing the children watch the Kiddie Pedal Tractor Pull on Sunday. The Sunday event, which also includes a tractor rodeo, will continue until about 5 p.m. The children will also find a petting zoo and other entertainment.
He said 222 tractors participated in the tractor pull last year. Engines vary in size from a three-quarter horsepower washing machine size engine to a 15-horsepower Bessimer that will fill up an average sized kitchen.
