Special Olympics Wayne County recently held its 2004 track and field games on the track at Dillard Middle School.
Wayne County had more than 400 athletes competing in running and walking events, the softball and tennis-ball throws, and standing and running long jumps.
Rhonda Barwick, athlete of the year for 2003-2004 for athletes 21 and over, presented Jonathan Delano of the Wayne Opportunity Center with the 2004-2005 award. He will be responsible for saying the Special Olympics oath at each event.
Chris Rouse, the 2003-2004 athlete of the year for athletes 21 and under, presented the 2004-2005 award to Robert Benson, a student at Southern Wayne High School.
A large number of volunteers also helped at the games by setting up events, coordinating the games, passing out ribbons and working with the athletes. Some of the organizations represented by volunteers included the Knights of Columbus, the Leadership School from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Wayne Community College's nursing program, Eastern Wayne High School ROTC, and home-school students.
